The rain was pouring down on Wylan and soaking him right to the bone. All because he'd forgotten his fucking umbrella. He could picture it, leaning against the wall next to the front door of his flat. And he'd somehow managed to forget it.

"Saints." He swore under his breath. The rain was getting worse, and he tugged the hood of his jacket as far as it would go over his face. He only had a minute or so left until he reached the building.

He started walking faster, and when he finally stepped past the doors, he pulled his hood down and took his satchel and flute case out from under his coat where he'd been keeping them dry.

All he wanted was to go back home and curl up in a nest of pillows and blankets with an endless supply of tea and a notebook and pencil. He'd been on a roll yesterday when he was writing the sheet music for one of his classes, and he still had a few ideas that he wanted to get down on the paper.

He trudged to his locker, leaving a bit of a puddle on the floor and had to try his lock three times before he finally managed to get it open. There was water in his eyes, his hair was plastered to his forehead, and he couldn't really see.

He set his bag and his flute case down on the small shelf inside his locker, and peeled his jacket off of his soaked shoulders. He hung it on the hook, hoping that it would be dry by the end of the day and when he started to turn around, there was someone standing there. Approximately six inches from his face.

"Ghezen!" He cursed and jumped a little. "What the fuck are you doing? You can't just go right behind someone and scare them like that!"

"Sorry, merchling. Didn't mean to make you jump." The stranger chuckled.

"I did not jump!" Wylan retorted. (He did jump. He definitely jumped.) Just who did this guy think he was, sneaking up behind people and calling them very odd names? "What the hell is a merchling?"

"Oh, well you're Van Eck's son, aren't you?" Wylan nodded, slowly. "And he's a merchant. And you're cute. So that makes you a merchling." The guy explained like it was obvious.

Wylan hummed. "Who are you?" He questioned. "And why are you at my locker?"

"Oh!" The boy looked excited. "My name's Jesper, and I've seen you in the hallways and I wanted to come say hi." Wylan raised an eyebrow. "So uh, hi!"

Wylan ran his hands through his hair, trying to make it a little more presentable and a little less soggy. "Is there something I can help you with?"

"Oh, yeah," Jesper smiled down at him. He had a nice smile. "I was wondering if maybe-"

"Jesper!" Interrupted a voice from across the hall. That was strange, Wylan hadn't noticed anyone there before. "We have to go. We're only going to have one shot once Rollins leaves his office, or we won't pull this off."

"I'm really sorry, merchling. That's Kaz, and he'll never forgive me if I mess this up for him. I'll catch you later." Jesper walked away, pausing after a few steps to turn and blow Wylan a kiss over his shoulder.

Well, this was certainly a strange day.

Wylan's first class on Mondays was chemistry, and it had actually been a very fun class. Science wasn't his absolute favourite subject, but he was good at it and he certainly didn't hate it. He'd even managed to slip a little of the formula he'd made into his desk partner Kuwei's experiment, and it had resulted in the concoction blowing up and leaving a slightly green tinge to Kuwei's skin. Exactly how he had intended.
