MAX
Max opened his eyes as the door opened. He watched the kid from earlier come back in and look at them. Max looked at him and saw his dark eyes run over every feature of Katara, like he hadn't seen something so beautiful. Max had never seen anyone so beautiful that was sure, but he wanted to know how he knew her.
"So..." Max said quietly. "You knew her when she was littler?" the kid was silent. Max sighed and clenched his jaw at the still room. The only sound there was, was coming from the monitor. Katara was breathing slowly, and still not quite evenly, but she was still breathing. That was all that mattered right now.
Max closed his eyes again as the kid left, and closed the door behind him again. He didn't like Max, Max knew that for sure, and he was sure he knew why too, but he didn't really understand why. Neither of them had her, so why did it matter?
Maybe it was the fact that Max was the one holding her while she slept. Maybe it was because Max was the one she wanted. Maybe it was because he knew her better.
Whatever the reason, the kid didn't like him and Max was actually okay with that. He didn't need someone that she knew then to like him, he just needed her to like him enough to want him to be around her. That was all he needed. That was all that he would ever need.
