Guy Germaine pov:
Man, I felt real bad.
"They're just big bullies." Charlie said to her. That word rang in my ears like a loud siren blaring. 'Bully'. The word I had used to describe Indiana just a few days before. She stood up for the team. I felt awful. I had made her out to be the bad guy all these years, and had forgotten what she was really like. She wasn't a bully. She was just friends with them. They were all she had. If there's one thing I knew about her, is that she couldn't be alone. She hated it. She always needed someone by her side, but she couldn't always see if the people by her side, would stand behind her when she needed them to. Sad to think about. They made her the way she was.
My mom helped her to the car as she looked down at her beat up vans and picked at her skin. My mom helped her into the back seat of the car and she buckled her seat belt. The ride back to my house was silent. All that was heard was the quiet breathing of Indie as it seemed like she was struggling to breathe. Her face was pale and her eyes were cold. She looked so...tired. Of everything.
When we got to my house, my mom walked her to the bathroom. She held a wet paper towel to the back of her head, where the bricks on the wall must have drawn blood. She wiped up her neck and back since the blood had slowly run down her back. My mom gave her one of my shirts to wear since hers was covered in blood. She walked her to the couch and put a blanket on her. My mom had given her an ice pack to put on her head. She asked her a bunch of questions to see if she was concussed. She wasn't. No headache. No disorientation. The only symptoms she was showing was sadness and embarrassment. My mom had decided to go pick up some food for us.
"Keep an eye on her, Guy. Keep her some company. Seems like she needs a friend." I nodded. My mom patted my face and went on her way out the door.
"Are..are you okay?" I asked. She turned to me and shook her head while letting out a swift exhale from her nose.
"Like you care." She scoffed.
"I do." I said back to her.
"Since when?" She asked. I couldn't answer that. I couldn't tell her that I always cared. And that I never stopped. She wouldn't believe me anyway.
"You know I don't hate you, right?" She looked at me and shrugged.
"Doesn't seem like it." She looked down at her hands again and began picking at them again.
"You shouldn't do that." I let out.
"Why? It's not a big deal."
"It's a bad habit." I said while sitting down next to her.
"So is biting your nails." She pointed to my nails that were barley even there.
"Biting my nails doesn't hurt me. Doing that to your skin, does." She shrugged.
"It's fine. Really, I'm fine. I should head home. Don't wanna inconvenience anyone." She stated while standing up.
"Yeah, right. My mom would kill me if I let you just walk out." I chuckled. "Plus, you're not inconveniencing anyone. Do you have any idea how much my mom has been talking about you coming over here again?"
"Really?" She asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, it's the only thing she ever talks about."
"Wow." She smiled to herself. "That's really sweet. But I'm sure you're thrilled to have me here."
"I don't mind it." I told her. "Kinda reminds me of when we were kids. We had alot of fun."
"We did, didn't we?" She smiled at me. For the first time in years she smiled at me. Not a smirk, not a grin. But a real smile. A smile that shows all her teeth. A smile that makes her eyes disappear.
