Indiana Jame POV

It was the day we had all been impatiently waiting for, restlessly training for, and totally ready for. Game day. Against the Hawks. I sat by myself in the back of the locker room quietly praying to myself that we would win.

"Dear Jesus, please let us win. I really wanna win. If we win I won't ever curse again- well, I'll try not to curse again. Keep me and my teammates safe. Amen." I whispered to myself.

"Amen." I heard in front of me. I looked up to see Adam.

"That was a private conversation, Adam." I muttered.

"My bad." He apologized while shrugging his shoulders. "Are you ready to beat the hawks?"

"No." I mumbled.

"Why not? It'll be so satisfying!" He tried to enthuse me. It didn't work.

"They're gonna be gunning for me Adam." I said. He made a face"Well, us. They'll be after us."

"It'll be fine. Let's go get ready now." He reached his hand down to help me up, I grabbed it and hauled myself to my feet.

"Ok. Let's go." I walked to my bag and took out all my pads and equipment. Shoulder pads, ice hockey pants etc.

The entire team was restlessly waiting to get on the ice. I looked over to see Guy and Connie sitting together. Talking. Laughing. They looks so close, and it made me think: 'Would that have been me if we had stayed friends?' A reasonable questions at that. I mean. His mom always wanted us together, and it was so obvious that he had a crush on me when we were younger. It would just make sense. But, enough about Guy. We had to go on the ice for the national anthem.

——
We all lined up on the ice in two parallel lines, us on the right, Hawks on the left. The ducks sun hawks were shooting death stares back and fourth the entire anthem.

Finally it was time to play. The hawks were doing their usual "Win! Win! Win!" Chant that they did every.Single.Game.

"Come on, let's get fired up! Quack! Quack! Quack!" We all soon followed with various voices chanting "quack!"

"Go,Ducks!" We cheered. Coach directed us to out positions and Adam was off to his position on the ice.

"Hey, Banks, James! Don't forget what side you're on!" Adam nodded.

"They're ducks,Jesse. They'll play like ducks." Coach defended.

"Hey, Jesse." I said. "I won't let you down." He smiled at me.

"Yeah, I know,Cake eater. Just gotta get you fired up." I smiled at him then took my seat on the bench.

The puck was dropped and so were we. I knew it. They were gonna play hard and dirty.

I intently watched the game and saw as two Hawks players slammed Adam into the boards. I winced when I saw him get slammed.

The game was in full heat and let's just say, we were not a good start.

"Line change!" It was my time. I hopped over the boards and raced to catch up with one of the hawks players. I was able to get the puck from him and bring it back towards the hawks goalie but right as I was approaching two of the Hawks played slammed me to the ground as they slammed me right in the chest with their sticks.

My teammates helped me up and I heard Bombay yelling at the ref to call a penalty for cross- checking. The ref shrugged his shoulders and Bombay made a big angry gesture.

"Line change!" I skated off the ice and sat down on the bench. "You okay, Indiana?"

"Yeah, coach. I'm good. Didn't hurt at all." I smiled at him while holding my arm as it got caught behind me when I fell backwards. Other than that, I was okay. The hawks were up by 2, and we were infuriated. They were playing so dirty and not even being penalized for it at all.

I watched from the bench as the team gathered around at the end of the 1st period.

"Don't be scared of them, Ducks. That's what they want. Keep your heads up. Play proud." The team started to disperse but I managed to catch their attention.

"Guys, I know that team and I know their moves. Keep a look out for them trying to get their stick stuck in your blade, and guys, they love a two for one so make sure each of you are on a different player so that does happen. They're big."

"What's a two for one?" Karp asked.

"See what just happened to me? Two of them checking one of us. So make sure each of our players are on each of theirs. Less injury's that way." The team nodded and Bombay sent them to their positions.

The team got back on the ice with more motivation than before. It showed. At some point in the beginning of the 2nd period, Adam gained possession of the puck. He skated hard and I jumped up and down cheering for him. He was getting up the to the goal and I cheered louder. McGill pushed him from behind and he fell and slid into the goal post.

"He shoots! He scores!" The announcer cheered. I jumped up and down and waited for him to come over so I could give him a big hug. But then I realised. He was still face down on the ice.

"Oh no..." I pushed everyone out of my way and jumped over the boards to get to Adam. I shoved Larson and McGill out of my way and kneeled next to him. "Adam! Adam! Are you okay?" I shook him hard, but I received no response. I started to cry. I got up and stomped over to McGill and shoved him.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" I screamed. "Look what you did!" I shoved him and again and started to sob. I kneeled back to Adam as coach ran to his side.

"Hey Adam, you okay? Buddy?" He didn't respond. I started to hyperventilate. His dad raced down to the ice and ran onto the rink. I started to shake and pick at my hands.

"Hey, Indie. He's gonna be okay." I heard a voice say from behind me.

"You don't know that." I cried. Guy looked down at me with sadness in his eyes.

"Hey, hey. Look. His eyes are open." I held my breath and turned around and fell to his side again.

"Adam, are you okay?" I asked once more.

"Hey, Di. I'm okay." He smiled faintly at me and leaned over to hug him, but pulled back. I was afraid I'd hurt him more.

"I'd hug you but I don't wanna hurt you." He smiled at me and I grabbed his hand.

"Coach. I can play." He insisted.

"I love your optimism , but we've got an ambulance coming for you. That was a nasty fall." Coach explained.

The EMTS arrived shortly after and I had to stand back as they got him strapped in. After he was on the gurney we all gathered around him.

"Did it go in?" He asked. I chuckled to myself. Of course that was his main concern.

"Yeah, man." Jessed replied.

"Hey Jesse, do me a favour. Kick some hawk butt." Jesse smiled at him and nodded.

"Alright, cake eater."

"I'm going with you." I blurted out.

"No, you can't." Adam insisted.

"I have to."

"No. You can't, Di. If you leave then the Hawks will think they've won. Don't let them chase you out." He let out a sigh. "Play for me."

I give a half hearted smile and nodded as they rolled him away. I wanted to cry. I had never played a game without him before. I wanted so desperately to go with him, but he was right. I had to stay here, and beat the Hawks.
