I knocked on the door, and Miguel quickly opened it, gesturing for me to come in. I held back an eye roll but did what I was told to do and walked in, and he closed the door behind me.
He stared at me with dark eyes, and I could tell that he was worried about his Alpha and the witch we had left him alone with. "Do you think that she's safe?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
I slowly nodded. "I think so," I said. "Gh- Targon, wouldn't have let her in if she wasn't."
"Hmph." He nodded and pursed his lips. "I don't know how I feel about her being here, though," he said honestly while he rubbed his face and sighed before he shook his head. "I want to say that she is safe, but..." He shrugged and grimaced.
"Does he hate other species because of a witch?" I asked and raised an eyebrow while I looked at him. "Is that why you are so leery of her?"
Miguel smiled sadly and shook his head. "I would answer, but that is up to the Alpha to tell you."
I wrinkled my nose and pursed my lips in annoyance. "Is the pack going to hate me?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, and my heart leapt into my throat at the thought of being hated. "Because I am a different species?"
"Not my family," Miguel said before he cleared his throat and shifted on his feet, looking away from me. "There might be some people that will look at you weirdly, but don't let it offend you too much." He gave me a pointed look, and I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
"If they try to land a hand on me, then I will kick their ass," I said, and Miguel chuckled and nodded in agreement. I pursed my lips before I licked them, annoyed. "I don't want them to think that I am weak because I don't know what I am and haven't had the "proper" training that they have."
"You will do just fine, Clove," Miguel said and placed a hand on my shoulder. He squeezed it reassuringly, giving me some comfort that I craved. "I believe in you."
I pressed my lips into a thin line and looked away from him, not saying a word because I had no idea what to say or do.
Finally, I cleared my throat and looked at him, making sure that my face was neutral. "Come on," I said. "Let's collect Ms. Lowell and see what information this new person has for me, ok?"
Miguel frowned but nodded. Worry filled his eyes, but he didn't say a word while he gestured for me to move out of the way so that he could open the door for me.
I held back an eye roll and scowled but did what he said while he gave me a smug look and opened the door for me. "I am more than capable of opening the door myself, Miguel," I muttered under my breath, and Miguel chuckled and closed the door behind us after we walked out.
"I know," he said and nodded again. "However, I will still open the door for you any time that I am able to."
I didn't respond and walked to my bedroom door, and Miguel chuckled while he followed me.
Biting back a sigh, I knocked on the door, and Ms. Lowell opened it just a crack and peeked out.
She looked between us with wide eyes and a pale face, and I could tell that she was nervous.
Trying to smile, she moved out of the way and let us enter the room, but I could tell that the smile was fake.
"Are you ok?" I asked when we were safely in the room and the door was closed. My voice was barely above a whisper while I studied my teacher, making sure that she didn't try to lie to me.
Ms. Lowell hesitated before she shook her head. "No," she said softly, and I raised an eyebrow. She cleared her throat and shifted on her feet while she looked away from me. "I'm... nervous."
