This was the longest night of my life. Selene cried and cried until she was dry of tears and her voice was gone. By the end she was so weak, she was shaking against me.
I picked her up and got in bed with her. She grabbed my shirt, so she was sure I wasn't going anywhere, and snuggled against my chest like a beaten up puppy. Sobs kept attacking her like hiccups for a while.
Eventually, she fell asleep and I started crying. Just a few tears were enough. I didn't want to wake her. I didn't take my eyes off her for a second all night and made sure nothing disturbed her.
Close to morning time, she starts moving. I think she is half asleep but I don't deny her snuggles. Her eyes open and she sighs.
"I'm sorry" she whispers
"Are you feeling better now?" I ask
"I think so"
"Then there is no need to apologize. Do you need anything?"
"No, I'm good here. Thank you for staying" her voice cracks.
I'm good here. In my arms.
I continue to rub her back, caressing carefully her scars, because now I know where they came from. These scars will probably never let her forget what her family did to her. After everything they put her through, they were so cruel to just toss her away to one of the deadliest creatures. Typhon; the monstrous serpentine giant.
"They don't hurt" she reassures me
"They hurt me" I reply without thinking.
She freezes and keeps her eyes on mine for a moment. She opens her mouth but nothing comes out.
There is no taking that back now.
Eventually, she clears her throat and sits up, resting her back on the headboard. I sit up straight with her. She looks down at her lap and I follow her gaze. Her hands are playing anxiously with the covers. I put my hand on hers softly to stop her.
"Zeus helped me escape Typhon" she speaks, breaking the awkward silence. "He pulled me out of there barely alive and brought me back".
"And there were no concequenses for Helios?" I wonder
"Zeus tried, but mother dearest got in the way. Because my family, just like a solar system, resolves around the sun. And when the moon is out, everyone's sleeping on it"
"Well, they are missing out. Only those that care and cherish it will see how fascinating it truly is. The sun is mostly static, doing and looking the same every day. But the moon adjusts and changes into beautiful phases depending on its own position and the surrounding circumstances. New moon, new crescent moon, 1st quarter moon, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, 3rd quarter, old crescent. All states of it are beautiful.
"And, let's be honest, static is kind of boring. Surprises are exciting" I add, rubbing the back of her hand.
"You're right" she smiles slightly
"I'm sorry, what? I am right? Can you repeat that?"
"Don't push it, Loki" she laughs and nudges me with her elbow.
She laughed. Mission accomplished.
And an idea pops in my head.
"What do you say we go away tonight?" I suggest
"I'm really not in the mood to leave my bed today"
"I know. So let's escape reality for a day, Selene. You need it and I have an idea I believe you'll love".
