alone in the auditorium

Alone in the auditorium
Because they gave me the keys for the day
I had to clean the bathrooms
Mop the floors
Take out the trash
But they gave me the keys to the auditorium
And I took that as a win

Bathrooms tidy
Floor all mopped
And garbage by the back door to be taken out when I leave
The rest of the time is dedicated to the basement

The basement
The artist's space to zen
The dressing rooms
Living room lounge
Small sink with a microwave
Toaster
Two fridges
A kettle and iron on the far table
A scenic flower painting propped on the table
Right angled coat rack
And a full length mirror in the corner
I found some chairs in storage
Round backed chairs with soft cushions
Perfect for the ill furnished dressing room
Which only had three mismatched chairs
To the dressing room they go
Plus two little soft benches
With swirly gold fabric
Raised for elegance

The dressing room looked more inviting
With these extra chairs
Like it wasn't abandoned anymore

I wish I owned this theatre
This space
This building of endless possibilities for artists and poets and actors
A safe haven for all storytellers
I wish this all was mine

I have to leave the auditorium soon
I'll have to hand back the keys soon
I'll have to move on from this moment

But they gave me the keys for the day
And I'll ride that high for as long as I can
