“Elena do you want me to call for the doctor?” Mrs. Vandus asked as she came in to check up on her daughter.

“No Mother, I just didn’t sleep much last night, in fact I haven’t been sleeping much lately,” Elena replied rolling over in bed. She didn’t dare tell her mother it was because of a boy.

“Very well, try and get some rest and I will tell Thomas you don’t feel well enough to go out today.” She patted the bed and left calling for the maids to bring her a phone.

A few hours later Saben entered Elena’s room. “What is it?” Elena asked.

“It’s Thomas. He wanted to check up on you. After Mrs. Vandus called and told him you weren’t feeling too well he wanted to come and see how you were doing,” Saben explained.

“Of course he did.” Elena’s sighed. “And now I have to go down and see him.” She started to get out of bed. Saben nodded and helped get Elena ready. She still covered her in makeup but not as much as if she was going out.

“I’m sorry Elena I just wanted to see how you were,” Thomas said as Elena entered the room. “I know I probably shouldn’t have but I was just too worried.” He took her hand. “After these past couple of weeks I’ve become very fond of you and since we’ll be married I feel like you’re already my responsibly.”

“That’s sweet and thank you for caring.” Elena faked a smile. “But do not worry I will be back to my normal self tomorrow.”

Thomas’s face lit up. “Good because I have a surprise for you.”

Elena couldn’t but help to think about James’s surprise and how nothing Thomas could say or give beat James’s surprise. James always knew what she needed and was there for her. last night had been perfect.

“Well I won’t keep you anymore. Please rest and feel better.” Thomas smiled at her and then before leaving quickly kissed her cheek.

Once he was gone Mrs. Vandus jumped from her chair squealing. “Oh my daughter you’ve done it! Tomorrow Thomas will purpose to you. Oh I just know it!”

Mr. Vandus took a huff from his cigar. “Well about time our families joined.”

Elena just stood frozen. In the past weeks Thomas had been coming to see her less and less and she had all but forgotten they would marry but now… Clearly Thomas had something big for tomorrow.

“Mother may I please go back to bed,” she asked. “I’m starting to feel light headed.”

“Of course Daughter,” Mr. Vandus said before his wife. “You’ve done a great honor to our family and you must have all your strengths back tomorrow. Go and I do not want to see you back out of bed.”

Nodding Elena returned to bed and pulled the sheets up over her head and thought about what was going to happen. If Thomas purposes tomorrow then she couldn’t see James anymore. She would have to marry him and never think about James again but she knew she couldn’t. No matter what she could never forget him.

For once Elena beat James to their hid out. She had been so consumed in her thoughts she didn’t hear James approach her and it wasn’t till he wrapped his arms around her that she knew he was there.

“You must be thinking hard,” James said as he kissed her temple. “I don’t think you’ve ever gotten here first.” He wrinkled his nose. “I don’t like it.”

“Why not?” she asked laughing.

“Because I want you to come straight to me.” He picked her up and carried her to the couch.
