Hey so I put a picture of Thomas Hathern up on the side. Let me know what you think please.

****************************************************************************************   Groaning Elena slipped on the dress and Saben helped her zip it up. “Saben do you know how jealous I am of you for getting to wear your maid outfit.”

Saben laughed. “Lord I know it. Who’s idea was it to think this looks good?” She clicked her tongue. “You look like you belong back in the 1920’s.”

“I know! And that was over a hundred years ago.” Elena glanced out the window. “Mr. High pitch is here.”

“Is that what you call him?” Saben snorted. “Though it works. I know you high society people have to talk in a higher pitch, which for the life of me I can’t figure out why, but his voice is so dang annoying. I don’t know how glass doesn’t shatter when he talks. Heck how can you stand it?”

“Because society says it’s what we do. And I can’t stand it. It gives me a headache every time. The worst part is I think he loves the sound of his voice since he never shuts up.”

“Elena are you ready?” Mrs. Vandus knocked on the door.

“Yes Mother,” Elena responded and picking up her purse followed her mother out the door and down to the men who were waiting.

“And to think you look more beautiful every time I see you.” Thomas beamed.

“Hmm,” she mused. “I don’t see how that’s possible. You’ve already given me so many complements.”

“And you deserve each one of them.” He took her hand and led her out to the car.

They arrived at a massive house and the door was opened. Thomas slid out first and helped Elena out. Press was there and the moment they saw Elena they pounced on her.

“Elena!” “Miss. Vandus! Over here!” “Mr. Hathern.” “We heard you two are now courting. What do you have to say about that?”

Thomas put his arm around Elena and pushed her away from the mob of press. “Damn people need to get a life,” he hissed.

Elena laughed. “That they do.”

They entered the house and led to the ball room. Men and women in all different colors stood around talking. Elena knew this banquet would be very, very boring. Sighing she smiled up at Thomas and let him led her in.

“Miss. Vandus what a surprise to have you join us,” said Mr. Travis. “You never come…”

“Miss. Vandus was kind enough to be my date,” Thomas explained.

“About time you two got together.” Mr. Travis nodded. “You picked the better brother. Thomas is a good man,” he said to Elena and then left.

Elena leaned over to Thomas. “Good to see my presses is such a shock conceding this is a charity.”

“Mostly old people who have nothing better to do come here,” he replied and lead her to get drinks. “The only reason I came was because of an award.”

“You won an award?” And there was the light bulb that told Elena why Thomas had wanted her to come, to show them off as a couple and to make him look even better. Now he was receiving an award but also had one of the most popular women on his arm.

More people came to say hello to Elena. It was normal for Thomas to be at charities like this but to have a Vandus was new and all people saw was her checkbook. Mostly the Vandus family did charities for orphans and homeless people while the Hatherns took care of the medical. But now the two richest families in the city were there.
