“Mother! Please! Please don’t make me marry him. I do not love him!” Elena begged.
Mrs. Vandus shook her head. “Elena you have no choice. You will marry Thomas and that is the end of this tantrum. You will stay in your room and if this ever gets brought up again I swear…”
“You’ll what? Destroy my life?” Elena interjected. “Oh wait you already are!”
Slapping her daughter Mrs. Vandus spoke quietly and coldly, “do not speak to me like that. Now go to your room and do not come out until you are ready to grow up and take responsibilities.” With that she left.
Elena balled her fists and went to her room. Her mother didn’t care about her. She would rather her own daughter marry someone she can’t stand just to gain more power than let her daughter to be happy.
Saben entered her room a few hours later. “Thomas would like to talk to you.” She held up the phone in her hand.
Sighing Elena took the phone. “Hello?”
“Good morning my sweet fiancé,” Thomas sang.
Elena bite down a groan. “Good morning though its barely morning, its more like afternoon.”
He laughed. “Yes sorry I was up all night last night and over slept so my body is messed up. But I wanted to ask you if you would join me for another banquet. I was hoping now that we’re engaged you would come with me to them.”
“Of course I would. May I ask what you’re getting awarded this time?”
“That’s a secret that I’m not going to spoil.” He sounded very pleased with himself.
Elena faked a laugh. “Well then I’ll be waiting to know the award my fiancé will be receiving.”
“Another banquet?” Saben asked.
“Yep.” Elena rolled her eyes. “So tonight he’s getting an award and is probably going to announce to the whole world our engagement and the end of my life.” She sank down into a chair. “What am I going to do?”
Saben sat on the arm of the chair and patted Elena’s back. “Just pray that something will happen. Everything happens for a reason so hopefully this is just a test.”
“I hope you’re right because I can’t live the rest of my life like this.”
Another maid knocked on the door. “Miss. Elena Mr. Hathern is here to see you.”
“But I was just on the phone with Thomas.”
“It’s Brad Hathern Ma’am, not Thomas Hathern,” the maid replied.
“Brad?” Elena was very curious at what was going on. Going down to see him she found her mother already talking to him.
“I don’t care if you’re Thomas’s brother. I don’t want you anywhere near my daughter. You ruin young girl’s lives and you will not ruin Elena’s,” she hiss.
Brad’s lip twitched. “Mrs. Vandus I am only here to talk Elena out to lunch. She helped me the other day and I would like to return the favor. Now I understand you not liking me but understand Elena is a sweet young woman and I would never do anything to hurt her. She is like a little sister.”
“Mother its ok,” Elena said entering the room. “You want to take me to lunch?” she asked Brad. He nodded. “Then I would love to join you.”
