Chapter 31
I didn’t want to go to this stupid dance, but no one wanted to accept that I didn’t want to especially after I let it slip that I was allowed to go. They all wanted me to come and have fun so I gave in to the pressure. When I told Aiden that I was allowed to come to the dance, he promised to take me. Then, out of the blue, he went back on that promise and told me that he might see me there because he had something to do first. I wasn’t sure what was going on with him, but I was starting to become curious as to why he seemed to disappear a lot.
Grudgingly I got ready, putting on my red and white dress and some light red-ish make-up. My shoes were black and strappy and I painted my nails a dark grey color. My hair was simply pulled to the side and curled at the ends. I put the usual amount of effort in and I looked normal, but I felt apprehensive.
Since Aiden, who was supposed to be my ride, bailed on me, I was driving to the dance myself. When I left the house, I called my mother and let her know like she told me to. She then made it clear that I was to be back at eleven o’clock and she would be calling to make sure.
When I reached the school, I parked and started towards the doors that led to the cafeteria which is where the school dances were usually held. There was a committee for these things and I was sure they did some sort of decorative theme. I practiced my smile on the way in, wanting to appear happy. The music, I noticed, was loud. The baseline of one of the usual pop songs was blaring. Maybe dancing the night away by myself would be the best option. I should ignore everyone and just dance, but I knew I was too self-conscious to do that.
There were already groups of people heading in with their friends. Some people even went all out and bought a limo to arrive in. I was out here, walking in by myself. Everyone seemed happy and not many people were paying attention to the fact that I was here. I hoped it stayed that way, but of course I was wishing for the impossible. People noticed I was here and the whispering began.
Sighing, my hand reached for the door and I walked in. The music immediately became twice as loud now and there was already a ton of people at the dance. The decorative theme was very flowery and more spring-like than wintery, despite the fact that it was winter. There were people everywhere. Some were dancing in the middle, while others were standing and talking or drinking and eating from the refreshment tables, and then there were those just sitting in the few tables that weren’t put in storage.
The first of my friends that I found were Lynn and Mike. They were standing on the outside of the dancing crowd and talking. Lynn hugged the life out of me when she saw me approach. I plastered a smile on my face.
“Hey guys. You look amazing.” I said over the music to Lynn who was wearing a little black number.
“So do you! That dress looks amazing.”
I looked towards Mike. “You don’t look so bad either.” I said to him.
“Thanks. Hey, Callan. There’s something I need to tell you.” Mike leaned in close to my ear. “I heard from Aiden.” He said.
“What did he say?” I asked, hopeful that he would be coming soon.
“He said that he probably wasn’t going to be able to make it.”
My face instantly fell. The one person that I was really hoping to see wasn’t coming. This night had just taken a turn for the worst. Now I was completely dateless.
