Chapter 18:
After school, Ethan was nowhere to be found. I waited for him near his locker, but he didn’t appear so I headed to the soccer field where he would probably be having practice. Unfortunately, I ran into Scott along the way.
“Hey,” he said awkwardly.
I ignored the awkwardness. “Hi Scott. Do you know where Ethan is?”
His eyebrows furrowed. “Why are you looking for Ethan?”
“You know what. Nevermind.” I walked ahead of Scott, going straight to the soccer field. There were a few guys already out there, but no Ethan. I did, however, see Carrie sitting in the bleachers and I quickly walked away before she could see me and get the wrong idea since she always assumed the worst when it came to me. I headed back towards my car, thinking that my best chance would be to talk to him at his house.
My phone vibrated and I opened it, seeing a message from Mark.
Where are you?
Crap. I should have realized that he would be wondering where I was. I hadn’t seen Mark since the lunch thing and I wanted to know what happened, but right now I had to find Ethan. I have to do something. I’ll talk to you later.
I made my way back to the parking lot and got into my car, driving home. When I reached my house, I sat in my car and stared across the lawn at his house for a moment before getting up and going inside my own house. Sports practices were usually done by five-ish, so I would have to keep busy until then.
In the meantime, I called Mark.
“Hey,” I said.
“Hey.”
“So what happened? Why did you punch him?”
“He just got under my skin.”
“What did he say?”
Mark paused before answering. “He said that you want him more than you want me and that it would always be that way.”
“If I wanted him more than I wanted you, I would be with him and I’m not. So don’t let his assholeishness bother you.”
“He also said you were only using me.”
I began to feel angry. Aiden was doing a really bad job of being friends with me and it hasn’t even been a day. “You know that’s not true.” I said.
“How do I know that?”
“I like you Mark. I really do. Just don’t listen to him. He’s trying to break us apart.”
