Jasmin hissed as Meerkat accidentally brushed her arm with his tail.
"Watch it!" She growled. The SandWing muttered a quick apology, hurrying after his companion. Winter walked right besides Jasmin, his gaze flicking past huge paintings from Queen Oasis's time.
"Wonder what that means." He nodded towards one that had a NightWing screaming as a barbed tail pierced through his heart.
"Death, obviously," Jasmin whispered. "And blood. Wonder why it's a NightWing of all tribes."
"Less talk," Meerkat halted, turning around. "We're here. Scorpion, could you alert the queen that two strangers want to talk to her?"
"Hey, we never said anything about wanting to talk to Queen Thorn," Winter objected. "Just someone that might be with her."
"Shush," Jasmin hissed. "Don't give away too much."
Scorpion, the older female SandWing, nodded curtly to Meerkat and stalked off to the queen's room. She came back a few moments later.
"She said that you could talk to her." She shot a glare towards Jasmin and Winter, then escorted them roughly inside, Meerkat trailing behind them.
A small, wiry SandWing with pale yellow scales and freckles on her wings sat on a tall chair. A younger dragonet around five years old stood besides her, his freckled snout cut with a small jagged scar.
Qibli.
"Welcome." Thorn dipped her head to Jasmin and Winter, her dark eyes filled with curiosity and wariness. "What do you want?"
"We'd like to talk to a SandWing called Qibli, Queen Thorn," Jasmin said. "I have to talk to him, along with my friend here."
Winter eyed her, scowling slightly. Qibli frowned slightly, as if he didn't recognize them yet.
"I don't think he knows who we are," Jasmin breathed. "Not yet."
"You aren't from the Talons of Power, are you?" She noticed a SandWing with black diamond patterns running down his back for the first time. A small, hairless creature sat on his shoulder. A scavenger in a palace of dragons? How odd.
"No," Winter shook his head. "We wouldn't want anything to do with that band of thieves."
Jasmin remembered how the IceWing and Qibli had gone to the Scorpion Den to track down Vulture, Qibli's evil grandfather.
"Very well." Thorn nodded to Qibli. "You may go talk to him. But if you hurt a single scale on him, I'll kill you both."
"Yes, Your Majesty." Jasmin said gratefully. Her talons itched with excitement as Qibli led them to an empty room.
She was finally going to be able to ask her friend all the questions she had.
