"did we really need to throw him in the pit, alby?" flo asked, a smile playing at her lips. she stood a few feet away from the wooden cages, eyebrows raised as she watched the newest recruit go through all five stages of grief in less than two minutes.
"relax, flo," alby insisted, voice steady as he took a few steps forward. he crouched in front of the gate, and with his back hand he beckoned the girl forward.
florence didn't hesitate to roll her eyes, but she obeyed nonetheless. not without grumbling, of course, but at least she followed orders. some days it was hard to even get her to remotely listen to directions.
"hey, green bean," alby broke the silence from where he crouched. flo forced a warm smile on her face from where she stood directly behind the boy, arms crossed in front of her chest as she leaned her weight onto her back foot. "you're not gonna run again, 'kay?"
when the newbie answered in silence combined with shocked breaths, florence laughed. "great." at that, she stepped backwards to allow room for alby; the leader stood up and opened the gate.
once the door was open and the greenie still seemed to enjoy the dank corner of the pit, alby sighed. "my name is alby."
"florence," she added simply, raising a single hand in greeting before silently reprimanding herself. one hand? girl, what are you doing?
alby fought a smile off of his face as soon as he saw her expression contort into that of her overthinking and self-deprecation, and he turned back to look at the boy. "now, can you tell us anything about yourself?"
florence was quick to jump in. "name, birth day, age, favorite color, any past girlfriends --"
alby cut her off with a quick turn and hard stare. "or anything about who you are? where you came from?"
"anything at all," florence nodded as if she hadn't just tried to gain information on his dating life that he most likely had no recollection of.
unfortunately for her, the greenie still seemed to be too overwhelmed to appreciate her comedic sense. she supposed it was fair, but it didn't sting any less.
he merely shook his head, hands fiddling anxiously. florence's heart panged as the boy searched for words, but none seemed to form.
"your name?" alby attempted, sounding far more sympathetic than he truly was. fake ass, florence thought, fighting the urge to roll her eyes.
"i can't remember anything," the greenie eventually admitted, brown eyes tearing up and into florence's. "why can't i remember anything?"
she hated this part of the month.
"it's okay, greenie," she soothed, lips twisting as she tried to keep her face from showing too much negativity. the green bean didn't need that -- not then.
alby only nodded. "hey, relax," he offered softly, his eyes never once tearing away from the boy. the greenie's panic-building breaths echoed through the pit. "it's normal."
"it happens to us all," flo added, inhaling deeply.
"you get your name back in a day or two," alby continued. "it's the one thing they let us keep."
the greenie shook his head once, and then he froze. flo's eyebrows narrowed, shaping themselves downward as she watched his movements. the brunette merely looked up and flickered his eyes between each of their gazes.
"what is this place?" he asked, voice gravelly.
at that, alby reached out an arm, hand open in friendly offering. "let us show ya."
