when light finally reentered their world, florence could barely feel her heart beat. her hand had found its way back into sammy's grasp, the small hand holding on very tightly to her own. he had no words to say, not since they left the glade, really, but perhaps that was a part of trying to survive. baby animals try not to draw attention to themselves, and in all honesty, sammy was a baby animal.a baby put into a world far bigger than him, forced to survive when he should've been loved, cared for, nurtured.
florence tucked away her anger into a deep part of her mind, opting to instead send a comforting squeeze to sammy's hand as they stared out the now open door.
teresa seemed to have been the first brave soul to truly step forward and open the door all the way. the room transformed in that moment, no longer mysterious and dark, but instead safe compared to the world waiting outside.
even so, florence followed the group into the hallway awaiting them. it was empty and cold, long and dark, and sammy's grasp somehow tightened as they walked together. each member of the group's steps were soft, careful, and almost nervous.
it was almost funny, in a way, that they were so scared. they'd been waiting to get out of that maze for so long, and this was the way they entered the world? it was almost disappointing to think that they'd been sheltered for so long, almost sad to believe that such a hell-scape was a safe place comparatively.
florence nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of clang, prompting the lights to flicker on one by one. she swallowed, wiping any trace of fear from her face for sammy's sake. he was already scared, and he did not need to see his only hope, his only trusted figure wear an expression of dread.
a buzzing vibration filled the hallway when the lights all came on, and flo came to the conclusion that these lights had not been active in quite a while.
even so, now that the lights were on, the only other option was to finally start walking. they followed the lit path, but florence felt as though this scene... it was so familiar, it made her skin itch, it made her heart ache.
she tried to push it away, but at every turn, she felt as though something was terribly wrong.
the group slowed to a halt when they reached a new door, this one framed by a blatantly obvious, and perhaps a bit rude, neon green sign reading 'exit.'
fry seemed to think the same as florence. "seriously?" he sighed, his brows raised as he stared at the sign, unimpressed.
"well, glad we don't have to solve any codes to get through this one," florence figured with a roll of her eyes.
thomas looked at her, and although he didn't smile, his eyes gave her enough information. yeah, they read. no kidding.
with that, thomas stepped forward, a hand carefully placed on the knob. he began to turn, slowly, and open it at just the same pace. florence braced herself, but nothing came.
instead, they were greeted by an abandoned massacre.
florence's face dropped, expression no longer readable once she first stepped through the doorway and into the new wasteland. one body after another lined the walls, blood splattered on every crevice or corner.
she shook her head, looking away before her body chose to revolt against her. although, it's not like she had much food in her body to throw up, she didn't want to risk getting rid of the only nutrients that still somehow kept her going.
as they walked, alarms on the highest points of the walls blinked orange, paired with an aggravatingly repetitive sound.
"what happened here?" it was the first time sammy spoke.
