(Kris POV)

The spell went off, sending a shockwave through the water. "We need to destroy the rune, it's dark magic so if we pump enough of our own magic in, we can break it!" I said. I knew a lot about these kinds of spells (I've even set a few up myself). We all readied our magic and started firing it into the rune. We got about 15 seconds in before we heard a large roar sound out all around us."The serpent's here! We need to hurry up!" Millie told us. "We can't! This rune's gonna take some time!" I exclaimed. "I'll get it off our backs, you guys keep at the rune." Alex said. He started firing lightning into the water towards the serpent though it only seemed to be holding it away. A thought struck me. The water. It's dispersing Alex's lightning. "Alex it won't work, we need you to--" I was cut off by the arrival of a small swarm of small, dark creatures with glowing eyes. "Great." I said sarcastically. They were Oni, creatures made of pure dark magic. They're strong but fragile making them a threat when focusing on other things. Before I could do anything, a bolt of lightning struck and arced across all of them, destroying most of them. This, however, allowed the serpent to slam against the magic dome keeping the water out. "Alex, focus on the serpent. I've got this!" I told him as I let out a shockwave from my hammer destroying another batch of them. One of them seemed to fly out through the barrier and into the water. It seems as though things can pass through from the inside but can't come in from the outside. As we continued I started to realize that this wouldn't work. We were being overwhelmed and the rune was too strong to be broken by one person. It was damaged, but still standing. I destroyed the last of the Oni and started helping Millie with the rune. "Alex, we need your help!" I told him, but he was still occupied with the serpent. With the water dispersing his lightning he had to strike when it got close and it was only a matter of time before it managed to break in. Time we didn't have. Alex seemed to realize this too as he struck the serpent away again. He looked at his sword for a moment before seemingly getting an idea. "Give me a moment." He told us. He closed his eyes and his sword seemed to start glowing with energy as the serpent dove in to strike again. He then threw his sword through the barrier with it burying itself into the serpent. The serpent reeled in pain and, still being shocked by the sword, swam off. "Alex... your sword-" "Not right now!" He cut me off. He readied himself for a moment before shooting lightning directly from his hands into the rune. We overwhelmed it with immense power before it started to glow and shake violently. "GET DOWN!" I yelled. We all took cover with me making a wall of wind, Millie shaping water into a wall of ice, and Alex putting up his shield. The rune exploded with parts of it slamming into all three of our barriers. Just as the shrapnel stopped, the ground shook and the whole city started to rise. As we calmed down I looked at Alex's empty sheath. "I'm sorry about your sword." I told him. He looked at me for a moment and smiled. "It's alright, I can make a new one. Now you might wanna hold on." He said. I noticed that the water above us was getting brighter and suddenly, in a large blast of water, the city resurfaced. "Never in my life have I been so happy to see the sky." Alex said. I turned and Millie looked awestruck. It makes sense considering she's never seen the surface before. Before we could celebrate. We heard a very familiar roar. "The serpent..." Millie said as the serpent, looking badly burnt, resurfaced. We got ready to fight before a large bolt of lightning flew past us striking it in the face. Alex walked up, lightning flaring across his body. "Not today you scaly fuck. We're on my turf now!" He yelled as he jumped high into the air and landed on the serpent's head. He pulled his sword out of its head and leapt off. The serpent turned around with its mouth opened to attempt to eat him. However, before it did Alex charged up with lightning flying off his body and fired it off into the serpent's mouth. The serpent stumbled for a moment and Alex used this to charge two more lightning bolts and fire them into the serpent's eyes. The serpent roared one last time before falling back into the water, unmoving. He killed it. Alex landed back on the platform, energy still crackling around his body. "We did it! We really did it!" I said looking at Millie, Still awestruck. "We should take you to the base." I said. "Base?" She said, "We'll explain everything on the way. We should leave now." Alex said.
