AWAKING AT DAWN, THE MOON HAVING JUST DISAPPEARED FROM SIGHT, I marked off another day on the wall beside me. Nothing seemed to suggest that this would be unlike any other day but I was wrong.  It was a day that I would remember for the rest of my life. The usual sound of the doors being unlocked and sliding open, the metal grinding slightly in the process, caused me to sigh as another day started. The sound no longer bothered me as it had the first hundred times as my ears had rung for minutes after it as I had learned to quickly block out as much sound as possible. Groaning bodies groggily got out of bed followed by their tired feet directing them to exit the small confined space we called home and line up outside with backs to the bars. I followed automatically the routine so ingrained until I was stood shoulder to shoulder with those next door.

Facing forward I kept my gaze straight not wanting to draw attention towards myself. Trying to go unnoticed didn't seem to work so well when there was a constant reel of guys trying to prove themselves to their friends. Not fighting back took all my strength but every time they knocked me down I just gritted my teeth and remembered her. In doing so I reminded myself why it was so important to not give them a reason to extend my sentence so that I could get out sooner rather than later.

Tim, a slightly portly middle aged man with thinning hair, walked down the line performing roll-call as he did several times a day, every day. When he stopped in front of me however he didn't simply move past and I thought back on what possibly I could've done. A smile caught me off guard and I didn't know how to reply.

"Pack up your things Jason, you're moving out."

Confused to say the least as I wouldn't be released for two more years and I hadn't fought back against the most recent attack that had Tim forcing me to go to the medic. Respectful of the older man who was one of the few who actually cared when a beating was delivered to an inmate, I sometimes worried that retaliation against him wasn't far away. Before Tim moved on and I lost my chance I quickly asked, "Sorry Sir but can I ask why? I haven't done anything wrong have I?"

"No Jason, but you are transferring to another facility today, so be quick. There isn't time for breakfast I'm afraid but I'll be back shortly to take you to the van and I'll explain a bit more then."

Heading back inside the cell, I started packing up my minimal possessions hearing the footsteps quickly pass eager for breakfast. I turned my head, already getting into a defensible position, when sudden footsteps not belonging to Tim entered my cell. Assessing the threat of the three men now cramming the cell, I almost laughed when one nearly tripped up over his own feet. To anyone else the three hulking bodies covered in ink would have terrified them but they were only human. Knowing what they came here for, I tried to give them a chance to retreat by asking, "What can I do for you?"

They didn't take the bait though and moved forward all taking out makeshift knives hidden within their waistbands. I eyed them warily knowing that they could actually cause some damage if I didn't fight back. I knew that it was highly unlikely that a shiv would actually kill me but the exposure risk was a high possibility when I healed way too fast.

I had always tried to downplay whatever injuries I received as even broken bones healed rapidly even when I couldn't shift to aid the process. Being locked up for so long made my wolf antsy who needed to be free and roaming. At first he had put pictures into my head of breaking out, an easy feat, but I couldn't. I couldn't do that to my sister; always have her on the run with me constantly looking over our shoulders for the authorities of both races. Her life was bad enough now, hiding while pretending to be human, I couldn't make it any worse. She'd been put into a foster home and although they were nice people they didn't understand. At night the connection was stronger and I was able to have glimpses of just how lonely and scared she was but I wouldn't allow her to come anywhere near here, for they were watching. I tried to reassure her through our link but I couldn't properly speak to her if I wasn't shifted, so how effective it was I couldn't really tell. It tore me apart to know she was still hurting from what they tried to do, from what they tried to take.
