LYING FLAT ON MY STOMACH, PEERING OVER THE EDGE, I TRIED TO NOT wriggle too much as the stolen trousers irritated my skin. Approaching the vantage point we had come across a stray mutt stumbling around drunk out of his mind and knowing that I would be entering in human form due to increased manoeuvrability so clothing would help me go unnoticed. He was out cold before we even touched him as he stumbled back and tripped his head on tree roots. Unfortunately the shirt was covered in vomit so I preferred to only take the jeans despite the fact that they were incredibly itchy. When I had shifted and stripped him of his jeans whilst holding my breath I turned to leave but conflicted I put him in the recovery position so he wouldn't choke himself to death despite being a mutt.
I surveyed the area and noted that if anything the odds were even more in my favour than earlier that day. The darkness would aid in being able to sneak inside as there were fewer mutts outside to avoid and by looking at them it wouldn't take much in their inebriated or sleepy state.
"Stay here and wait for Belle. If I don't come with her then I need you to take her and keep her safe. Don't argue with me Nikki, you can't come in with me: you're what they want."
"Fine but I'm here if you need me," Nikki said but I couldn't help if her acting skills were being used on me after all I had seen how effective they were just minutes ago. I didn't want to waste time to find out and kissing her on the forehead I whispered, "I love you and tell my mate I love her as well. I'm making you responsible if I don't make it so make sure she is safe and happy."
"Jasey-" She said eyes watering.
"No Nikki don't get me started. Promise you will do this for me. Promise me." I said gripping her shoulders.
"I promise but make sure I don't have to keep that promise, okay?"
"I'll try my best, be safe."
With that I made my way down the slope, avoiding the large group lounging on the grass and headed for the back door nearest the basement, being careful not to let the keys in my pocket jangle. Trying the handle I discovered that it was unlocked and shifting it open a crack I peered inside. No-one was in view so I slipped in, closing the door behind me. I gritted my teeth at how run down they had let my old home become. It used to be somewhere where all were welcome, it was homely with people around all the time and food available at a constant rate. Now the wallpaper was peeling and there was rubbish on nearly every surface; my mother would have died at the sight of her home in such a state.
Shaking the thought out of my mind I focused on getting to the basement which was as I recalled the second door on the right which would open up to some stairs leading down. Making my way through the junk, I heard loud laughter come from somewhere at the front of the house and halted pressing to the side of the hallway but no-one came. Letting out a breath I continued on my way only to find the door locked. I swore in my head as I had hoped it would be easier as going through all the stolen keys one by one was not going to be quick. Nevertheless it's what I now had to do so I carefully extracted them and identified what would be most likely. The lock was brass in colour and I could just make out the make, so I looked through the keys and was glad to discover that there were only three which matched the description. Picking one at random I placed it in the slot only for it to not go in all the way. I tried the next one but still no luck, as I touched the last one I prayed that it was the right one since otherwise I did not have it. The key fit in perfectly and managed to turn within the lock, opening it with a click. Pushing at the door I was met with darkness which I hoped meant that no-one was physically guarding the prisoners: something so lazy and inept if it were true. And if it wasn't well I just hoped I could my mate out in time before it became a problem.
