Demarco

Melody and I walked into the bakery to the counter.

Decker waited on us. "What can I get you?"

"Can we get two hot cocoas?" I asked.

"Yeah." Decker grabbed our drinks while we waited.

"It surprises me that you wanted to have hot cocoa with me." Melody moved a strand of hair behind her ear.

"I'm sorry," I said.

Decker returned with our drinks. I paid him before we took our drinks to a table. We shrugged off our coats, hung them on the back of the chairs, and sat down.

"I know you called, and I didn't return your call," I said.

Melody sipped her hot cocoa. "I didn't mean to pester you."

"You didn't."

Melody gazed at me.

"I've been dealing with something personal. I didn't want you to think it was because of you."

"If you ever want to talk, I'm a good listener."

"I'll take that into consideration." I smiled and sipped my hot cocoa.

"Demarco, I didn't want to pressure you. I thought you could use a friend."

"Why?"

"You seemed like you needed one." Melody shrugged.

I studied Melody. She fidgeted when she was nervous. I found it endearing.

"So, what made you join the youth group?"

"Oliver suggested it. I enjoy speaking freely without judgment. What about you?"

Melody straightened her posture and squared her shoulders. "I wanted to maintain my purity. Do you think that's strange?"

"Not at all. I find it admirable." I smiled.

"Oh, good." Melody placed her hand on her chest. "I wasn't sure how people would react to my beliefs."

"There's nothing wrong with wanting to wait."

"I plan to wait for my husband," Melody spoke confidently.

"What about dating?"

"My dad said a guy should respect my beliefs and work for me. If he's worth his salt, he will prove it." Melody's passion for her beliefs drew me to her. She's a rare gem. "What about you?"

"My folks taught me that you treat a woman as a queen. It would be best if you respected her in every sense. I plan to do that with my girl."

"Any girl would be lucky to have you."

"Oh?" I arched my brow.

Melody's cheek tinged with pink as she averted her gaze and moved a strand of hair behind her ear. "Well, uh, yeah."

I couldn't help but grin. Melody was adorable when she blushed.

"Why are you grinning like that?"

"No reason." I shook my head and sipped my drink.

I sat with Demarco and tried to act confident with him. It wasn't working. He made me extremely nervous.

"So, what do you like to do for fun?" I asked.

"It depends."

"On what?"
