D stopped by and told me what had happened at his house. I sat on the couch, trying to understand what he told me.

"Will you say something?" D asked me.

"That is...I don't know what that is."

"You're not helping." D rolled his eyes.

"You told me what happened. I'm still trying to understand how a shoe comes into play with punishment."

"I have a Latino mother and a black father. A shoe always comes into play when we get punished."

"I didn't realize your family enjoys corporal punishment."

"You've met my family. Why would this surprise you?"

"You're family seems so sweet."

"Mel." D gave me a knowing look.

I sighed. "Sorry. I'm working on trusting people too easily."

"No worries."

"I still can't believe your brother attended a party without your dad getting angry."

"Pops wasn't angry that Jay went to a party. He was angry because Jay didn't tell him the truth. Honesty is vital when it comes to trust."

"Larkin said the same thing. I had to learn who to trust and who not to trust. I need set clear boundaries with people, too."

"It takes time. It did for me." D shrugged.

"What made you decide to give me a chance?"

"You were willing to forgo your feelings and opt for a friendship. You should never settle."

"It wasn't about settling. I would rather have your friendship than not have you at all."

D's lips curled into a smile. He held his palm out to me. I placed my hand in his. He bowed his hand around mine.

It had been a battle, but I slowly won it with an excellent support system.

"Are you up for a treat?" I asked Mel.

Mel arched her brow. "I'm always up for a treat."

"Good." I stood up and helped Mel to her feet.

After putting on our coats, we left and headed to the bakery. When we arrived and approached the door, the lights were off.

"I don't think the bakery is open," Mel said.

"Let me check." I grabbed the door handle, opened the door, and entered the bakery.

The lights turned on. "Surprise!" Everyone yelled.

Mel's eyes widened, and her jaw dropped. She looked at me in shock.

"Surprise, Angel."

Mel looked at me, then at everyone smiling. "I don't know what to say, except why? Today isn't an important date."

"Not yet." I turned Mel to me. "I wanted to make things official between us."

"What?"

"I want to make you my official girlfriend if you accept."

Mel stared at me, then accepted with enthusiasm. Everyone clapped and whistled as I pulled Mel into a sweet kiss.

Most guys would ask their girls alone. But I wanted to make it memorable. Mel deserved it.

I couldn't believe D made this grand gesture to make me an official girlfriend. "I'm a little confused."
