With the time off from work, I focused on classes, helped with the benefit, and spent time with D. I hadn't realized how quickly you could fall for someone. Heck, I never expected D even to give me a chance.

"What's going on in that sweet mind of yours?" D asked.

"Huh? What?" I looked at D while sitting on my couch with him.

"You've been off in your own little world. I was curious what you were thinking about?"

"I never thought you would give me a chance." I shrugged.

D tilted his head and regarded me.

"When I met you, you seemed like you needed a friend. When we talked, it was nice. Then you avoided me. I didn't understand why." I shrugged.

"Mel, there are things about me that I haven't told you. Trust me. You're the last person I wanted to avoid."

"You don't need to tell me. It's your personal business."

"But I want to tell you one day. I hope you don't view me differently when I do."

"Whatever happened doesn't change my opinion of you. You're the sweetest guy I know."

D's lips curled into a smile. I couldn't help but return the smile.

Spending time with Mel was terrific, but I had this nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach. It was like something would rip what we had from me.

I even talked to Kyler about it while getting ready for the benefit.

"What do you mean you have a bad feeling about the benefit?" Kyler arched his brow.

"I don't know." I shook my head. "It's like I have this sense of dread in the pit of my stomach."

"Nothing will happen at the benefit. After what happened last year, our pops are taking extra precautions. We have several kids attending the carnival."

"That's what's crazy. The feeling has nothing to do with the kids."

"Then what?"

I glanced at Mel.

Kyler followed my line of sight. "Are you thinking something will happen to Mel?"

I shook my head. "I'm not sure." I looked at Kyler. "I finally took that leap and allowed myself happiness. What if someone takes it from me?"

"No one will take it from you. We all know how special Melody is to you. Don't worry. We got your back."

I wanted to breathe easy, but I couldn't. The last time I didn't heed the side of caution, it cost me. Let's hope I'm not wrong.

I helped Sofie, Rachel, and Mercedes with the game booths. It felt like someone was watching me. I glanced around to find everyone busy.

"Melody?" Sofie asked.

I looked at the others. "Huh?"

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. Why?"

"You seem distracted."

Rachel and Mercedes looked at me in concern.

"Oh, I'm fine." I waved off Sofie's concerns. "After what happened at the pharmacy, I scan my surroundings."

"Are you sure?" Rachel asked.
