Dance with me

Demarco

After Sunday services, Mel kept working through her trauma. I wanted to try something, hoping she would agree.

We stood in Mel's living room. I scrolled through my phone until I found a song and pressed play. I approached Mel. "Can I have this dance?" I held out my hand.

Mel glanced at my hand before placing her hand in mine. I pulled her to me, held her hand, and rested my free one on her lower back. Then we started moving.

The Sweetest Thing by Juice Newton played as we danced. Mel rested her hand on my upper arm as we moved to the song. If you listen to the lyrics, they fit us.

Mel lay her head on my chest. I rested my cheek on top of her head as I held her close to me. Dancing with Mel was everything to me. I had fought against getting close to Mel while she broke through the wall I had built. She never pressured me while I kept resisting her friendship.

Ultimately, I couldn't fight the feelings that were building between us.

"Angel, you are my everything," I whispered.

Mel lifted her head and looked at me with so much love in her eyes. "You are everything to me, D. Thank you for loving me."

"You never need to thank me. It has been my honor to love you."

Mel gave me a breathtaking smile. I loved her smile.

I heard music playing from my home office and checked it out to find Demarco dancing with Mel. I leaned against the wall with my arms crossed and watched them.

After that scum hurt my baby, I wasn't sure if she would survive. But Demarco never left her side. How do you thank someone for loving your child?

I retreated after a few minutes. Demarco wouldn't try anything with Mel. He proved it with his actions.

I closed my office door and found a message waiting for me on my phone.

The situation has been handled. You can rest easy. - Unknown.

Who is this?

A friend.

What friend?

After sending the last text message, Austin worked on sending our alert system to the Harper and Gray family with instructions. We needed a fail-safe in place if shit went south.

"Everyone should have received the message with the application. Once they install it on their phones, one press will alert all of our phones," Austin told me.

"Good. Junior is still trying to find the devices that Albert Bates planted in Oakridge."

"How hard is it to detect explosives?"

"Bates rigged them to be untraceable. It's his insurance policy."

"Bates won't talk."

"No, but someone else will." I turned on my heels, left Austin's office, and headed to a door. I unlocked it, flicked a switch, and entered, closing the door behind me.

Robert Haywood shielded his eyes from the light before lowering his hand.

I dragged a chair in front of his cell and lowered myself down. "We need to talk."

"I have nothing to say to you," Haywood said through gritted teeth.

"You will when I tell you where your daughter is."
