Marla dragged a chair to the table, sat down, and swiveled her body to me. "Sorry to intrude, but I need some advice."

"About what?" I asked.

"How do I get someone to hire me to take care of their kid?"

"Well, I would alter your tone," Jorge said.

Marla looked at Jorge. "I wasn't asking you."

"Then no one will hire you. Good luck with your job search."

"Do you always butt into other people's conversations?"

"Only when I hear desperation. And girl, you're beyond desperate."

Marla rolled her eyes. "Shouldn't you harass some other poor soul?"

"But you're so much fun." Jorge grinned.

"And you're a pain in the ass."

"Feisty. I like that. Maybe we should go out sometime."

"Sorry, but you're not my type."

"Why? Is it because I'm blind?"

"No, because you're an ass."

"And here I thought I had a cute one."

"Do you mind?" D asked Jorge.

"What?"

"Stop flirting with the girl. She's not interested."

"I had to take my shot." Jorge shrugged.

D shook his head. "Ignore my brother. He needs friends."

Marla arched her brow before turning to me. "So, back to my dilemma. How do I get someone to give me a job?"

"I would use a nicer approach. People will entrust their children to your care. They won't do that if you come across as abrasive," I said.

"I try to act polite. People still turn me down. I need one chance to prove I'm good with kids."

"Then show them."

"What do you mean?"

"Interact with the kids as you did with that little girl."

"I can do that." Marla's face lit up. "Although I wish I had gotten their information."

"I'm sure you'll find someone to give you a chance."

"I hope so." Marla blew air past her lips. "So, how are you doing?"

"I'm okay." I shrugged.

"If you need anything, let me know."

"I will."

Marla smiled, nodded, and got up from her seat. She bid us goodbye before heading to the counter. I hope one day, someone will give her a chance.

I didn't realize Melody would be here when I came to drown my sorrows in sugary goodness. I figured she would still be hiding in her house after what happened. I'm glad she wasn't.

I ordered a dozen of donuts before heading home. On my drive home, I contemplated what Mel said. If people would give me a chance, I would prove I could take care of their kids. It's not like I dress in rags. I always wear nice clothes to interviews.

I get the same response from everyone. "We'll let you know." In other words, don't bother.

I entered the house with the box of donuts and set it on the table.
