Demarco

After squaring things with Mel, I arrived at work.

"Hey, Demarco," Ricardo greeted me.

"Hey, Ricardo."

Elias approached us. "Good, you're here. I need you both to demo the upstairs bathroom. So, Odin can get the tub in place for the drywall."

"Who's doing the electrical?"

"Nash is stopping by to give us a hand."

"Who's Nash?" Ricardo asked.

"Nash is a cousin. He's a doctor and an electrician," I said.

"How is a doctor an electrician?"

"Nash became a skilled electrician before earning his medical degree. We thought he was nuts when he mentioned it," Elias said.

Confusion swept Ricardo's face.

"It's best not to ask. Our family picks some crazy careers," I told Ricardo.

"I'll keep that in mind."

Elias walked away to check on the others before talking to Owen. Ricardo and I headed upstairs to demo the bathroom.

I turned off the water before doing anything. The last thing I needed was to flood the upstairs and piss off Elias and Owen.

"So, how's it going with that girl?" Ricardo asked me.

"We had a slight misunderstanding yesterday. But we talked. I apologized for my behavior." I pulled a cabinet and sink from the wall and set it in the hallway.

"What did you do?"

"Acted like a jealous boyfriend." I worked on the toilet next.

"Wouldn't that make you a couple if you acted like a jealous boyfriend?"

"Yeah."

"Are you a couple?" Ricardo lifted the toilet and carried it to the hallway.

I walked past him to another room to shut off the water in the tub. "We're getting there." After turning off the water, I returned to the bathroom.

"I didn't realize you liked anyone."

"It's been a minute. I had some personal issues that I was dealing with."

"Like what?"

"I rather not talk about it if you don't mind."

"Yeah. Sure."

I didn't know Ricardo well enough to discuss my past. I rarely discuss it with my family, and I've known them my entire life. Why would I tell a stranger my story?

"What about you?" I asked.

"What about me?"

"You never talk about your personal life. Is there some girl you like?"

"Well, not really."

I glanced at Ricardo while we pulled the tub.

"Unless the girl has three legs."

I fumbled with the tub and almost dropped it. "What?"

"Girls don't have the right tool if you catch my drift."

"Wait. You're gay?"

"Yep."

"How did I not know this?"

We set the tub down to take the cabinet and toilet to the roll-off.

"That would explain why you don't talk about women," I said.
