Melody
With everything going on, I managed to avoid Joshua. I didn't want to hurt his feelings, but his offer didn't sit right with me.
I arrived at work and put my coat and purse in the back before putting on a smock.
"Hello, Melody," Bob greeted me.
"Hey, Bob." I smiled.
"How have things been with you?"
"Well, Demarco asked me to be his girlfriend."
Bob's face lit up. "That's great!"
I couldn't help but grin.
"I'm so happy for you, Melody. From what you describe, Demarco seems like a fine young man." Bob hugged me.
I didn't hesitate to hug him back. "Thank you. D is so sweet."
"You deserve a sweet man."
"Oh, before I forget, the church is having a benefit carnival for the Oakridge Center for Children. I would like it if you came."
"I will talk to Marge about it. It will tickle her pink to attend a carnival. It's been a while since I treated her to some good old-fashioned fun." Bob gave me a genuine smile.
"Can I talk to you about something?"
"Sure."
"A guy in the youth group approached me about a job opportunity. He said I could make a lot of money."
"I see. And what do you think?"
"I don't get a good feeling about the offer."
"That's your gut telling you not to accept it."
"I don't want to hurt the guy's feelings by declining his offer."
"Mel, let me give you a piece of advice. No one has the right to get upset if you turn them down. If you don't like this offer, you don't need to accept it. Do what makes you happy."
"I like working in the pharmacy with you."
"I do, too. You're a ray of sunshine when you come to work. I've told Marge all about you. I say that Melody sure has her head on straight."
"When will I meet Marge? You talk about her so often. I feel like I know her."
Bob looked past me. "Right now."
I turned in his direction and saw an older woman with gray hair approach the counter.
"Hey, Bob," the woman said.
"Marge, meet Melody," Bob introduced us.
The woman smiled and extended her hand. I took it and shook it.
"It's lovely to meet you, Melody. Bob talks about you often."
"Same."
Marge held up a brown paper sack. "You forgot your lunch."
Bob took the sack from her. "Oh, thank you, honey. I would forget my head if it weren't attached."
We giggled as Bob grinned. Bob and Marge were just too cute.
While Bob spoke to Marge, I checked orders.
I heard the bell, greeted a customer, and smiled. "What are you doing here?"
D smiled. "I was picking up a few items and wanted to see you. Is that okay?"
"Yes, of course. I was checking orders."
D glanced around, stepped toward the counter, and leaned into me. "I need to tell you something."
I leaned into D. "What?"
