CHAPTER 3
I don't remember falling asleep, but I did however wake up feeling energized and happy until I remembered I was in the hospital and two years of my life were missing. I spotted Liam and Niall talking in hushed tones in the corner of my room. "Guys?" I said, and they noticed I was awake. "Where did the girl go?" I asked as they slowly walked over. "Your roommate?" Niall said. "My what?" I said, that's not what I wanted to hear. "Shut up Niall," Liam said, hitting the back of his head. "Hey!" I said, "Don't hit him." "Sorry," Liam said like he was apologizing to his mother. I sighed and looked back at Niall, "So this girl-" "Ann," he said. "Ann," I repeated, "is my roommate? Where? In an apartment?" Niall shook his head and looked over at Liam, "Maybe you should tell her, mate," he said. Liam took a deep breath and looked at me, "She's your Uni roommate," he said. Uni? Did he mean University? I was already in university?! "What university?" I asked. "You got into the one of your dreams," Liam said. I gasped, I'm a student at an art school. "What am I in for?" I asked, hoping it was what I thought. "Culinary arts, but you also seem to be keen on English Language Arts." I smiled, that was probably the best news I had heard since this accident. "So she's my roommate at the school?" Liam nodded his head. "But we're so different," I said, "How do we get along?" "Get along?" Niall said with a laugh, "You two are practically sisters." Right then my door swung open again. Niall and Liam turned around, blocking my view. "Oh Liam, thank god your safe!" I heard my mothers voice. Liam walked forward and into her hug. "Where is she?" I heard my fathers voice. Niall moved aside as Liam let go of my mom. "Maman!" I said as she came to my side. "Well she still has her French," Niall said quietly as my mother wrapped me in a tight hug. "Brooklyn!" My mother said, "Oh my god, are you okay, sweetie?" I nodded my head, "Just a little shaken up," I told her. "What happened?" My father asked, coming to my other side. "I-I don't know," I said. "Sweetie, what do you mean you don't know?" My mother asked, staring deeply into my eyes. "The last thing I remember is starting summer vacation after grade 10 then I woke up on a street here in London with Liam by my side. There's only one problem," I said nervously. "She doesn't remember me," Liam said. "Liam," Niall warned. "You lost your memory?" My mother said, looking at Liam then back at me. She asked it like a question even though she knew the obvious answer. "Could you give us some space," my father said harshly. Liam looked like he was fighting back angry tears. "Come on, mate," Niall said, pushing him towards the door. I had some feeling that there was negative history between Liam and my father, but positive history between Liam and my mother. "Sweetie, I'm so sorry," my mother said, taking my hand. "Mom, I'm so scared," I whispered, "What's going to happen." "Well," I heard the sound of my doctors voice, "There is a slight chance you will regain your memory. But the chances are slim, the best thing I can suggest to you right now is heading home, getting some rest and continuing with your usual routine." I nodded my head. "Hello I'm Dr. Evans," he said, shaking my fathers hand as well as my mothers, "You must be Mr. And Mrs. Darren. We've been expecting you." My mother nodded her head as my father said, "So what is wrong with her?" "Well, she hit her head rather hard and long story short, she lost part of we memory due to the blow. But looking at the test results over the past few days, she seems to be back to normal." "Well that's good news isn't it," my mother said looking back at me. "So what now?" My father asked. "She goes home," he said casually. He smiled as he handed my father the release papers. My mother turned to me and squeezed my hand. "We just need to see her once next week then we should be good." "Next week? She's coming back to Canada with us tomorrow," my father said. "I may be mistaken, and correct me if I'm wrong, but her home is now here in London, right?" My father was about to respond no when my mother spoke up, "Yes, she moved here a year ago." "Then she needs to pick up on her everyday routine here in London, she needs to reconnect with her friends and just keep living," my doctor said. "But she doesn't know anybody," my father said. "Well she is starting to know her boyfriend again, along with her roommate and her friend. Brooklyn, do you find yourself wanting to go home to Canada and risking the chance of never regaining your memory, or do you want to go to your new home and work to try and regain your memory." I looked between my mother and the doctor, I could tell they both wanted what was best for me. But when I looked at my father I knew he saw what was best for me as something else. He wasn't just about to leave me here when I am so vulnerable. "I-I don't know," I said. "Well I'll let you think about it, but right now, I think your friends want back in." My doctor left and held the door open for my friends to follow in. "So what's going to happen?" Ann asked, I thought she had left. "Oh, hi Ann," my mother said, "The doctor told us she is going to be fine, she's allowed to leave now." "That's great," Niall said. "Oh, by the way Mrs. Darren," Ann said, "This is my boyfriend Niall, he's part of the same band as Liam." "Yes," my mother said with a kind smile, "I believe we've met before." "Is she allowed to go home?" Liam asked. He had his arms folded across his chest, but I could tell he was breaking down inside. Everyone became quiet after his words. "Yes," my mother said slowly as my father glared at Liam, why did he have so much against him. "But the question is," my mother said, "Which home...?" I saw Liam tense up, I couldn't keep my eyes from his saddened posture. "Please," he said quietly, "Please don't take her away from me," his voice cracked. Ann rested a hand on his arm but he moved away, "She already doesn't remember me, don't take away the only shot of finding what we lost! Please," he was on the verge of tears, I could tell. I felt terrible, he was suppose to be my boyfriend and here I was breaking his heart. But I didn't know him. "Liam," my mother said quietly. "I love her, you can't take her away from me!" He was straining against all the pain he was holding in. "Well maybe we can find a compromise," my mother said quietly. A moment of silence passed, but then Liam spoke up, "The beach house," he said. My mother looked at him confused, "It's perfect. She knows it, it's a routine, it's neither here nor Canada, I can go and still be with her, and it's where our relationship started. I get the chance to make it all happen again." My parents shared a glance, "Absolutely not," my father said. "Shut your mouth, David," my mother said, "We're doing it."
I walked to the front doors of the hospital but stopped there as my parents followed, but Niall and Liam stayed behind. "Are you guys coming?" I asked. "Brooklyn," Ann said, "It's safer if they aren't with us." "What? why?" I asked, what difference did it make. "Sweetie, they're in a band," my mother said, "And my guess is that there are fans waiting for them. They're staying back to make sure you're okay." "Oh," I said quietly. "Don't worry, we'll meet up with you at the hotel," Niall said. I slowly nodded my head then was led outside.
We made it to my parents hotel with barely any problems. It was still so overwhelming to take this all in. I had a famous boyfriend. That was so weird. Weren't things complicated? Were we not torn apart by jealous fans? I don't remember anything and it was killing me inside. We walked inside and my parents told Ann and I to sit while they checked in. During the time they were at the front counter, Liam and Niall arrived. Niall sat down right beside Ann but when Liam came down to sit beside me, he hesitated then put himself at the other end of the couch. "So have you given it any thought?" Niall asked me. I nodded my head, "I think the beach house is a good idea." He seemed like a total sweetheart, I was really starting to like Niall. He had a funny side, but also a kind heart. "But you need to stay in London until next week right?" Ann asked. She was growing on me too. Even with her rough looks she was truly a great person. I nodded my head, "Where are you going to stay until then?" I shrugged my shoulders, "I don't know." "Brooklyn," my fathers called. I looked over at him, "We've contacted your brother and since your mother and I can't stay here, he is going to come and stay with you until after your doctors appointment then bring you down to the beach house." "Okay," I mumbled. "But where will they stay?" Ann asked, "They can't stay at the university, no non-students are allowed to stay the night." My father took a deep breath just as Liam said, "They could stay at my place." "No! Not going to happen!" My father said. "David!" My mother snapped, "He isn't some axe murderer! He was your daughters boyfriend!" I felt terrible as Liam looked away, saddened by my mothers use of the pass tense. "Would you rather pay thousands of dollars for a hotel?" My mother said. I knew my father was completely against it, but all he really had a choice of was yes, or lose thousands of dollars. He stiffly nodded his head. I realized that through that whole conversation, I did not input one word. I sat there awkwardly, "Thank you, Liam," my mom said, resting a hand on his shoulder. He nodded his head, "It's the least I could do. It's my fault I didn't reach her in time." "Liam!" Ann exclaimed. "Don't say that," Niall said. "Sweetie, it was an accident," my mother said. Liam shook his head, "I could have stopped it." "Liam stop that," my mother said. "I could have saved her," Liam said. "Don't you dare blame yourself for this Liam Payne," my mother said, "I don't want to hear another word out of you about this." Liam sat there in silence, "Now," my mother said, taking the reins in this situation, "Brooklyn, you look exhausted, I don't think you will be able to make it to Liam's tonight so would you like to stay here with your father and I?" I nodded my head, "Okay so Liam would you be able to pick us up tomorrow morning to bring us to the airport?" He nodded his head. "Good, and then you can either stay at the airport or head home and wait for Josh's flight. I told him to call you when he landed and then he will head back with you two. Does that sound good?" Liam and I both nodded our heads like we were young school children listening to the principle. "After Brooklyn's doctor appointment, we will have a flight booked for the three of you to join us in St. Thomas." We both nodded our heads again. "Good," my father said, "Now you need to rest, Brooklyn, get on upstairs." "Okay dad," I said. They both turned away and I look that moment to say something, I rested my hand on Liam's leg, "It wasn't your fault," I said and he looked up into my eyes, "Don't blame yourself." He kept his eyes locked on me as I slowly stood up and followed my parents.
