See You Again

Chapter 14

Our base was under attack for four days and counting, I haven't slept at all, I've stayed on the rooftop and haven't gotten off at all, every time I see someone I wait until I see a gun and I fire, I was genuinely scared because I was supposed to be at least a little bit safe in base, but now our medical rooms are filled.

Today was the worst they kept coming in waves, me and the seven other guys on the tin roof had the most busy side. Five out of the eight of us had a M-60 and mowed them down, me and another guy had both a sniper rifle and an assault rifle, the other guy just had an assault rifle and shot the guys that got to the fence which wasn't many.

***Casey POV***

It was all over the news, everyone kept asking me if Carter was okay and I always felt bad when I said I didn't know, Eric kept asking too and I was about to break so I asked the guys to take him on a camping trip this weekend.

"Hey buddy you ready?" I bent down level to Eric, I handed him some snacks and he nodded, "okay go have fun I'll see you Sunday" I kissed his cheek and then he ran off to where Matt was. I walked out to talk with the guys, "first rule do not be stupid, second take care of them and always watch them, third please don't talk about Carter with him I'll text you if there is any news" they all nodded and gave me a hug.

Kaylee walked with me back into the house as the boys left. "No news okay that is my first rule, second we're gonna have fun!" I laughed at Kaylee, she was my best friend now, it's funny how much Carter and Connor brought us together. "Girl I know it's hard but just for the next hour don't think about him" I nodded then walked over to where she was making some shots. "I swear you are just a wild teenage girl sometimes" she laughed then handed me a shot. "You know it! now let's get this night started!" We toasted to her words then started drinking the shots she made.

***Carter POV***

The last thing I remember was sitting in the humvee going back to base from our patrol, I was sitting on the right side behind the passenger seat. We had put on a Nickelback album and it was all soothing until everything went black. I heard faint shouts but it faded away as I blacked out, it was like falling asleep.

I don't know how long I've been out but I woke up in some hospital and let's just say it wasn't in Afghanistan, it was white and very bright with a lot of machines all connected to me. I started to freak out as I remembered what happened, I tried to get up but I couldn't move my legs. I looked up and saw casey asleep on the chair and Eric sleeping in the hospital bed with me. I could barely move my arms but what little movement I did make woke Eric up, "dad!!" Casey shot up and reacted the same way Eric did. "Sorry I didn't call on your birthday Eric, how old are you now nine?" He smiled then shook his head, I totally forgot we had volunteered to stay a year or two longer to help out at the base. "I'm sorry..." I bent my head in shame, I didn't even know how old my son was, "it's okay I turned eleven last month, but now that you're okay I finally got my birthday wish" I messed his hair that was a nice high and tight cut but stylish he looked cool, I was almost jealous. "Hey can you go get me some water?" He nodded then walked out leaving me alone with Casey.

"Hey is anyone from my platoon hurt, where are we and please tell me what's wrong" she held my hand then sat in the bed next to me. "Everyone is fine they are actually all waiting in the waiting room, we are in a hospital in Germany, and I'll get the doctor" she went to get up but I stopped her, "can you bring the guys in here" she nodded then walked out of the room while I checked to see if my legs were still there.

"Hey cap, how Ya doing?" They all walked in with their bags and uniforms on, I shook my head "why aren't you guys home you should be home with family" now I was holding these guys back from going home. "We're going to fly back as a platoon just like the way we started" I smiled, it's funny how much the military brings people together. "Thanks guys, I'll try to get us out of here as soon as I can" they nodded then left once Casey and Eric came back with the doctor.

Let's just say I was thankful the doctor I had spoke english because I failed German in high school , "so why am I here doc and sorry but how long have I been here?" Casey and Eric both sat next to me as the doctor began to speak. "You've been in here for a week days, so you've been in a coma for quite awhile, so your squad told me that you were in a humvee when an IED went off and you were thrown out of the vehicle about twenty feet you hit your head and your back on some rocks so it will be sore and maybe hard to move but we can fix that with rehab" I nodded but I still didn't understand "so I checked and still have my legs why do I feel like they aren't there?" I already had some conclusions in my head but I wanted him to say it. "You are paralyzed from the waist down, when the IED got you from underneath it messed up your back and legs but it wouldn't have been that bad if you wouldn't have gotten thrown out, now you were in a coma because you didn't have a helmet on when you landed on your head" Casey's jaw clenched and I knew I was going to hear an ear full but I was just glad to be here paralyzed or not I was home.
