See You Again

Chapter 3

"Welcome back Gaines, sorry you couldn't come back with your platoon but we needed the best men here" i finished gathering my things "thank you sir and not a problem at all" he showed me back to our room I noticed blake wasn't there and there was finally a replacement for Jake "hello, I'm Carter Gaines nice to meet you sir" I noticed it was a captain. ""Hey sergeant where is blake, he get to leave safely?" He looked down at his feet and I knew what he meant, I patted his back then walked out to the shooting range.
***casey POV***
Ugh it's only been four days and I miss Carter, how am I supposed to do this for four years? I remember when they left the first time, I wanted to just make them both stay but how was I supposed to explain that to him, he didn't even know I liked him. Emily gives me a hug everyday which is comforting yet reminds me that he isn't here to give me a hug.
***carter POV***
We've been out here for two weeks now and now I appreciate base better, we were clearing out small towns yesterday and sergeant got taken out by a sniper, we've been trapped by that sniper ever since. "Hey anybody got a sniper rifle!?" I heard feet moving and in a matter of seconds a rifle was in my hands. "Okay I'll be on the roof, I need a spotter and bring your rifle, everyone else stay away from windows but watch our exits" I took my helmet off and put my desert boonie hat on knowing I wouldn't be able to see with my helmet. "Corporal are you sure you want to do this?" I saluted my captain and then nodded my head yes.
So we have been up here for five minutes and he only got my arm so this is probably my final shot, I lined it up for his head and took a deep breath, I pulled the trigger back and it all felt like everything was in slow motion, I closed my eyes and my spotter spoke "hit" I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. We were about to go back inside until we saw a group of of enemies came riding up, "go tell them to get ready I'll try to hold them off" he nodded and I started firing shots, I hit three out of the six before they got here, I grabbed my assault rifle and started gunning them down.
I ran back down the stairs into the dirt house we were in "two on bikes in here now get ready" captain nodded then I gave the sniper rifle back to whoever it was.
We stayed here holding our ground for four weeks until today when the evac helicopter could finally land. There was barely enough seats on there for all of us but we managed and got back to base safely. When we landed at base I walked straight to the generals office and handed him the dog tags of the ten fallen men. "Since your the only one left in your squad we will put you in a special forces team and see how you do" I nodded then got the details for my meeting tomorrow with the new team.
When I got back to my room I started packing everybody's things up but mine, I felt the tears roll down my cheek as I did this. I was about to carry the boxes out to where their bodies were but then I realized it was Casey's birthday today. I rushed and got people to help me carry things over then sprinted back to my room to grab my laptop.
It was Thursday and it was about two fifteen in the afternoon over there, I face timed Casey anyways just incase I had to leave again. When the screen popped up I forgot I hadn't taken a shower yet and I was still in my dirty bloody uniform, but she answered before I could do anything. "Hey, happy birthday Casey!! You working?" She nodded and I could see tears roll down her cheek "Ya I know I've been busy and outside of base for the last couple of months I'm sorry but hey happy birthday" I heard laughs in the back ground and then Emily appeared on the screen next to Casey. "Hey sorry I couldn't call on your birthday sis" I smiled apologetically then we said goodbyes.

So I had to wake up pretty early to meet the new team, I got dressed in my uniform and ran down to the barber for a quick haircut, now it was high and tight not short and messy. I walked over to the tent labeled 107A, the one I meet the guys or women at.
"Lance corporal Gaines?" I looked at a guy who looked to be the leader "yes sir that's me" he shook my hand then led me to the back where there was three other guys chilling drinking beer while watching a soccer game. "If we were betting I'd bet on Barcelona" they turned around, looked at me then turned back to the match "Bayern is going to win, we got the Germans" Ya but Barcelona has Suarez, Neymar and Messi up top, but I kept that comment to myself.
We sat around watching the game and just getting to know each other for about an hour until it was mission time and we were sent off base.
