Third Person POV.

Classical music and idle chatter fills the stuffy air as Karl attempts to loosen the too tight button up shirt around his neck. He wrings his finger around the fold, trying to let himself breathe as he follows his father around. "Stop fiddling," he scolds quietly as he turns to fix Karl's collar before they begin to make their way toward an older man and a younger-looking one.

"Senator Jacobs!" The older man greets, shaking his father's hand firmly. "How have you been? It's been far too long,"

"It has been far too long," his father agrees with a wide practiced smile. "How have you been, Mr. Halo?"

"I have been good! I recently remarried, so Nicholas here—" he refers to the younger man, that looks like he's around Karl's age. "—has another parental figure,"

"Congratulations!" Karl's father says.

"Hopefully the second mature figure will help with his..." Mr. Halo pauses, searching for the word before continuing quietly. "Behavioural issues," the younger man— Nicholas rolls his eyes before walking away without being excused.

Karl's eyes trail after his broad shoulders that sit nicely beneath his black suit jacket, and dark brown hair, that's messy, but in a way that looks unkept rather than dirty. Karl's mind wanders, imagining what he would be like to run his fingers through the boy's hair, jumping when his father places his hand on his shoulder, bringing him back to the conversation.

"Karl, could you please fetch me and Mr. Halo cups of champagne?" He asks with an urging smile. "We have some catching up to do,"

Karl nods and turns away promptly, looking for a waiter with a platter filled with golden liquid or a cocktail table with two cups placed atop it. He weaves between finely dressed professors and leaders, narrowly missing a lady's hand whacking him in the face as she tells an exciting story.

He grabs two glasses from a waiter walking past him, turning to return to his father and his friend, but being stopped by the young man from before. "Is this for me?" Nicholas asks with a cheeky grin before taking one of the cups from Karl's hands and taking a big gulp.

"Well, it was for your father, but that's...fine," Karl looks him up and down skeptically.

"What's with the scowl, Jacobs?" he asks with a chuckle as he begins walk, urging Karl to join him.

"You're stopping me from doing what my father asked," Karl tells him as he walks beside the boy, his father's glass still in hand. An uneasy feeling growing in his stomach as Karl's hand brushes Nicholas' where they dangle between them.

"So? I'm sure he'll be fine without a couple more drops of alcohol in his system," he says as he opens large french doors that lead to a balcony, stairs leading down the right to the sprawling garden below. "You coming?" He asks as he walks through the doors. Inviting golden fairy lights lining the trees and the winding paths around the fountain at the centre as the fresh, cold air nips at Karl's cheeks.

He follows the boy skeptically, his eyes wander around the beautiful sight and land on the boy beside him where they now stand at the landing at the top of the stairs. His dark brown eyes twinkling in the fairy lights as he sips on the glass in his hand. "Aren't you a little young to be drinking?" Karl asks.
