Rain sometimes felt like he had already lived to 100, but with little to show for it.
There was only one thing that was going to get him away from the life that fate had handed him. And he had known what that was from the time he was fourteen years old when the family he had lived with for two years returned him to the orphanage when the wife caught her husband looking at him inappropriately once too often.
Thank god! And good riddance.
He had been perfectly happy being sent back. Not missing being in that house at all.
They were a wealthy couple who were not able to have kids, so they decided to adopt. The husband was a doctor and the wife spent her days doing charity work, socializing, and spending their money.
They probably thought it would elevate them in the eyes of their social circle to take in a poor orphan and raise him.
But they had been totally unprepared for the time and effort required to have a young, energetic boy in the house. After the initial thrill wore off, they hired babysitters and went about their usual business, ignoring him for the most part.
What he did learn in their home though was that education was something no one could take away from you. And being a doctor could get you a very nice life with social standing and job security.
At least at the orphanage, even though there was no real affection, he was generally safe and could sleep peacefully at night.
And he had Sky.
Sky had been his best friend from the time Rain came to the orphanage when he was seven years old.
Rain's parents died in a car accident that year. He had an aunt who could have taken him in, but she already had a child who was ill with a rare form of cancer so she was unable to care for him as well.
He had moved back to the orphanage and stayed there till he turned eighteen when they had politely asked him to leave to make room for other kids who were waiting for a spot.
And that was fine. He had been waiting for that day for years, to finally be out of the system and begin to build his own life. He had put all his focus and energy into getting good grades to get into Medical School.
If it wasn't for Sky, he didn't know how he would have survived. And Sky would say the same thing about Rain. They were more than friends, really more like each other's family...always watching out for the other, chasing the same dream for a better life.
Now they were adults, and roommates, both in their third year of Medical School with three more years to go.
But Sky had had it rougher than him.
While they were still in high school, he became involved with a handsome, worldly university student who showered his hungry heart with attention and passion.
But things soon turned toxic as the true nature of the man, who took advantage of innocents, became apparent. It took him a while to escape the man's unhealthy hold, but he succeeded with Rain's understanding and support.
Sky pushed aside his hunger to be loved into a deep, dark corner of his heart and focused on his schooling to build a better life for himself.
Seeing Sky go through what he did made Rain avoid any entanglements.
He didn't want to be at the mercy of anyone else. His sole focus became getting the best grades he could to become a doctor, his ticket to pulling himself out of this life.
Going through these difficulties only made him more determined. If there was one quality that he had in spades, it was his stubborn determination. Once he made up his mind to do something, he did it happily and would not rest until he got it done.
