13: AWAKENING

Rain woke up.

The sound of rain was the first thing he became aware of since it was dark in the room and his eyes had not yet adjusted. 

It had now lost its ferocity.

It plopped gently against the wall-to-wall glass windows. The sound was soothing.

He had always loved the rain, which was a good thing since it was also his nickname, he thought stupidly...then laughed at himself.

He rubbed his cheek lightly against the pillowcase.

The softness of the cotton, the subtle smell embedded in them was different than what he was used to when he woke up. But it was comforting, a bit familiar, quenching. 

He had never slept anywhere else but in his own bed. But he wasn't disoriented, he knew where he was, why he was here.

He wasn't sure what time it was as his phone was in his jeans pocket on the floor somewhere far away, but the storm had died down, a couple of hours must have passed.

His eyes adjusted.

The curtains were still open so moonlight filtered in through the rain-speckled glass and lit the space just enough for him to see everything clearly.

He looked around the room that Phayu and he had stumbled into so blindly. It was bigger than his entire apartment.

He finally turned and allowed himself to look at the man sleeping next to him.

He was facing him, one hand under the pillow where his head rested. Black hair tousled, full eyebrows winging over eyes that were closed in sleep, eyebrows fanning across cheeks.

He had never slept in the same bed with anyone else before, not even Sky. Never woken up next to anyone.

When he agreed to stay the night, he had surprised himself even more than Phayu. He could have insisted on taking a taxi back despite the rain. Storms always eased, even though it might have taken a while.

He could even take a taxi home now, it was probably still only 10 or 11 o'clock.

But he wasn't going to do that.

He knew the danger of spending more and more time like this with Phayu, he was setting himself up for a fall down the road.

He had kept telling himself that it was only a silly crush, a harmless fantasy or flirtation. But he could no longer lie to himself.

As much as he had actually wanted to experience great sex, he would never have proposed this arrangement with anyone else.

His mind had found a way to delude himself into believing that it was a clinical business-like arrangement. A research project that would allow him to not get romantically involved.

And all the things that Phayu had shown him sexually were...wow.

Beyond any pleasure that he had imagined, hoped for.

Not only the way he touched Rain but also the way he encouraged Rain to touch him, do anything to him. Rain felt no boundaries, no inhibition for what they could do to each other.

And in some ways, he was not surprised that the physical connection was so good, so strong.

What he had not expected was the warmth, the affection that Phayu showered on him. With every sweet smile, soft look, and warm touch, he breathed life into his parched, lonely heart.

It infused Rain with happiness and made him want to hold him tight and never let go.

And even he - who had never kissed anyone before, or never dated anyone - understood that if he was lying here staring so adoringly, so longingly at someone who was sleeping, that he was in love.

Rain didn't know long how he lay there gazing at Phayu, but eventually, he too opened his eyes. He made that little sound that people make when they are rising out of sleep.

When he spied Rain facing him, his eyes smiled first before his face and lips followed.

He reached out and stroked Rain's hair, then picked up his hand and kissed it. "How long have you been awake? You should have woken me up."

"Not long. I just got up."

Rain hesitated for one moment and then pulled Phayu's hand to his lips and kissed his palm. His heart was pounding fiercely, not used to putting himself out there in this way, hoping he wasn't giving himself away but needing to share his feelings somehow.

Phayu's forehead creased a bit in slight confusion at his action, as his eyes searched Rain's, not sure whether it was just a reciprocal response to what he had done or if it meant something more.

Just then a loud rumble rolled through Rain's belly and they both laughed.

"Ok, ok. We have ignored your stomach for too long! Let me jump in the shower quickly and finish making dinner. I will leave some clothes out for you so you can take a shower too."

As Phayu went into the bathroom, Rain sat up and stretched. He felt sore in places he had never felt before. It would probably feel even worse when he started actually moving around.

When Phayu came back out, he was wearing a black tank top and soft grey sweatpants that fell like water over his tight butt and sturdy thighs.

Rain almost melted back onto the bed in a swoon, but somehow he gained control over himself.

"I ran a warm bath for you. That should help if you are feeling sore."

He could feel the weight of his heart expanding. He was not used to anyone pampering him this way.

"Thank you, Phi." He said softly, trying to swallow the happy ache in his throat.

"Use anything you like in there and take your time. I'll see you soon." He said, reluctant to part from Rain.

After Phayu left, Rain made his way into the bathroom. He saw the tub was filled with steaming water and scented bubbles and there were clean towels, a new toothbrush, and some pain-relief cream laid out for him.

Just one more act of sweetness from Phayu to tuck away deep into his heart to pull out down the road.

In those few seconds of hesitation earlier, before he kissed Phayu's hand, he had made the split-second decision to fully enjoy and gather up all these moments with him.

He would bank them in his heart and hold them tight, something precious, that belonged only to him, that no one could take away.
