Chapter 1

The Foster house

"Mom, it happened again," Alsie said, leaning over her mother's bed.

"You're dealing with this one," Keefe said, rolling over to face the other way.

Sophie got up and rubbed her eyes, "Okay, fine."

She got up and walked Alsie back into her room, only to find feathers all over the floor. The carpet couldn't be seen, just feathers, feathers, and more feathers.

"Well, let's clean this up. Do you trust your conjuring, or do you want us to sweep it up?"

Alsie thought about it for a moment, then said, "I'll try conjuring it away"

She closed her eyes and snapped her fingers. When she opened them again, only a few feathers remained.

"I did it!" Alsie exclaimed. "I actually did it!"

"Good job! Where did you send them?" Sophie asked.

Alsie opened her mouth to answer, but was cut off by a cry from upstairs. "WHY ARE THERE FEATHERS IN MY ROOM?" Sophie's other child, Rowan, yelled.

"Whoops." Alsie said.

The Vacker House

"BOO!" Delia shouted, appearing out of nowhere in Arya's room.

"Delia! You have to stop doing that! You're freaking me out!" Arya told her twin.

"That's the whole point." Delia replied.

"Well, you need to stop."

Delia rolled her eyes. "You're just jealous that I got the cooler ability."

"Hey, being a Shade is awesome!" Arya said.

"Not as good as being a Vanisher." Delia retorted.

"No way, being a Shade is the best." Arya replied.

"Well, I can turn invisible." Delia commented.

"Technically, so can I."

Biana and Tam walked into Arya's room.

"Girls, please stop. You've been arguing about this ever since you guys manifested. Both your abilities are awesome." Biana said.

"Well, mine is more awesome!" Delia said.

"Seriously, girls, that's enough." Tam scolded.

The twins dropped their eyes to the ground. "Sorry." they mumbled.

"Good. Now, go get ready for school." Biana told them.

Then they walked out of the room. Delia started to, but just before she did, she whispered to Arya, "Have fun with your boring ability."

"DELIA!"

The Dizznee House

"Mom! Kerry froze my pillow again!" Marcelo cried.

"Yeah, but you burnt my doona!" Kerry yelled back.

"It was an accident!"

"Well, so was freezing your pillow!"

"No it wasn't!' Marcelo shouted.

"YES IT WAS!" Kerry exclaimed.

"NO IT WASN'T!"

"YES IT WAS!"

"Kids! Stop!" Marella yelled. "Kerry, unfreeze your brother's pillow.'

Kerry rolled her eyes. "Fine."

She concentrated, then watched as the ice slowly disappeared.

"Now, Kerry, Marcelo, Cayden, get ready for school." Dex told them.

"Yes, Dad!" the three kids chanted.

Marcelo went upstairs to grab his uniform, only to find it frozen.

"MOOOM!"

The Heks house

Caspian sat on his bed, bored and alone. Like usual.

With a mom like Stina Heks, fun was not a common thing in the household. His dad, Jensi, was a little better, but was out a lot, probably trying to have as much time away from his wife.

Caspian didn't blame him.

Stina was... intense.

"Caspian, are you ready for school?" Stina called.

"Yes, Mom." Caspian replied.

"Good. We want to give a good impression on your first day back."

Caspian rolled his eyes and ran down the stairs.

"OK, perfect." Stina said. "Let's go."

Caspian walked up to the leapmaster. "Foxfire!" he yelled.

The Endal House

Jasper paced his room, denting a groove in the carpet. It was his first day back at Foxfire ever since he manifested as a hydrokinetic on the holidays, and he was nervous. His control of the water was... unpredictable, at best.

"Jasper, come on! You don't want to be late for your first day." Wylie yelled from downstairs."

"Yes, I do." Jasper mumbled under his breath. To his parents, he said, "Coming!"

He pounded down the stairs and found his parents waiting excitedly.

"I can't believe you are going to be taking hydrokinetic lessons!" Linh exclaimed, "You will have so much fun."

Jasper forced a smile. "I can't wait!" he lied.

"OK, then, what are you waiting for?" Wylie asked, "Let's go!"
