Chapter 12

Jasper

The next hour was a celebration. Biana was the first to run over and tackle-hug Tam, crying into his chest. Linh was close behind, but, being the kind soul she was, waited until Biana was done.

"I'm so, so sorry." Tam whispered.

"Please, never leave me again," was Biana's muffled reply.

Jasper watched from afar, as his uncle got up and went over to Arya and wrapped her in a hug, Arya sobbing onto his shoulder.

Rowan had gone upstairs to tell Delia. On the stairs, Jasper heard her say;

"If you are joking, I am never going to forgive yo—" she cut herself off when she saw her dad.

She ran over to him and hugged him, crying. "Dad!"

Tam smiled, crying himself. Tam went over to everybody in the room, hugging them one at a time. He even pulled Keefe in for a short hug, much to his surprise. 

"Tam, I don't blame you. At all." Biana said.

Tam hugged her. "I know. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have let this break me. I have to be stronger than this."

"No you don't. You may act tough, but everybody has weaknesses. Just please don't leave me ever again. I don't think I could do it." Biana begged, a few tears falling down her cheeks.

"Hey, hey, it's OK. I'm back! And trust me, I'm not going anywhere."

Jasper went over to Alsie.

"Hey." he said.

She smiled, "Hi."

"How are you going?" he asked.

Alsie shrugged. "Well, everything is better now. So I'm good. What about you?"

Jasper thought about it. "Things will be different. But, I think I'll be just fine."

A few months later

Things slowly returned to normal. Well, a new normal. Everybody across the lost cities heard about everything that happened, and the children became heroes. Everybody at Foxfire lined up for ages to just talk to 'New Black Swan,' as they were being called. And this brought them a whole lot closer. For Alsie and Rowan, they became more than just 'Sophie Foster's kids'. For Delia and Arya, they stopped fighting quite so much, and enjoyed life as it happened. For Kerry, Marcelo and Cayden, they also stopped bickering regularly. For Jasper, he did end up getting better control of his hydrokinetics. And for Caspian, well, nothing changed with his parents. But, he did gain friends, which is more than he ever could have hoped for.

They were all sitting at their regular lunch table, chatting. Suddenly, Willa Chebota, Maruca's child, came over.

"Hey, I was wondering, could I sit here today? I'm in a bit of a fight with some of my friends..."

"Of course!" Delia exclaimed.

Maruca sat down next to Marcelo.

"Hey, you're Marcelo, right?"

"Y-y-yeah." Marcelo stuttered.

"I'm Willa. Nice to meet you." she smiled, and tucked her silky brown hair behind her ears.

Marcelo blushed. They all talked for a bit, and then the bell rang to signify the start of the next session. Everybody got up and got ready. Alsie ran over to Marcelo and nudged him.

"So, Willa, hey? What's up with her?" she teased.

Marcelo flushed red. "Nothing!"

Alsie rolled her eyes. "You obviously like her!" she exclaimed.

He shoved her. "Stop! Before somebody hears."

"OK, OK. but expect some epic teasing."

"Of course." Marcelo said.

The rest of their friends caught up with them.

"Hey, what's going on? And why is Marcelo blushing?" Kerry asked.

Alsie giggled. "He has a crush on a certain Willa Chebota!"

Cayden smiled. "Knew it. That's 5 lusters, Jasper."

Jasper sighed, "OK, I'll give them to you this afternoon."

"Wait, wait, wait. You were betting on who I liked?" Marcelo asked.

"Yep." Cayden said.

Everybody laughed. The 9 friends walked to their next session, smiling and chatting.

They had finally stepped out of their parents' shadow.

They had created a new legacy.
