Delia

Delia clutched Arya's hand as Sophie and Fitz got ready.

"OK, it's time." Sophie said.

Biana went over and hugged her. "Thank you, Sophie." she whispered. "And even if you can't... I know you did all you could. Oh, and tell him I love him, and that I'm not angry that he killed Evila."

Sophie hugged her back. "Well, if everything goes to plan, you can tell him that yourself."

They pulled back, and Sophie pressed her hands to Tam's temples again. Biana walked over to her children and wrapped them in a hug, careful not to put too much pressure on Delia's healing ribs. Everybody sat in silence as Sophie pushed her way into Tam's mind. Her breathing got heavier and quicker again, and Delia's panic bloomed.

What if she couldn't fix him?

What if she fixed him, but he wasn't the same?

What if—

Her worried thoughts were cut off by Sophie, out of breath, gasping and panting. Keefe helped her sit down on the nearest chair. Everybody looked at Tam. Biana paled when she saw nothing had changed.

"Well?" Biana asked. "Did you... can you...?"

Sophie tried to catch her breath. Once she did, she slowly shook her head.

"I'm sorry. There's nothing I could do. Those shadows are too strong. Tam is gone."

Rowan

"No!"

Rowan wasn't sure which of the Vackers said it. But all of them were crying. Linh was crying. Everybody was crying. Biana was holding tightly onto her children. Arya was hugging her back. But Delia was twisting in her mother's grip. She got out, and ran up to the room she was staying in. Rowan slowly followed her up. Silently, he sat down next to her on her bed. She laid down in his lap, sobbing.

"It's not fair!" she cried. "It's not fair!"

He stroked her hair. "I know, I know."

"It's all my fault. If I hadn't been taken by her, Dad wouldn't have murdered her."

Rowan forced her into a sitting position, and looked at her. "No. Stop. Don't think thoughts like that. That's how you break."

Delia nodded. "OK."

Rowan pulled her into a hug, letting her cry on his shoulder. He had to hold in his own tears. He had to stay strong.

Suddenly, he got an idea.

"What?" Delia asked.

"Will you be okay by yourself for a second? I need to do something." he told her.

Delia pulled back. "Okaaaaaaaay. What is it?"

He shook his head. "I can't tell you yet, OK? Just trust me."

He quickly ran down the stairs. Everybody was surrounding a distraught Biana, heart-broken Arya and a distressed Linh.

Rowan stood up on a chair. "Everybody! Listen!"

Everyone turned their heads to him.

"Mom, how did you try to break the wall of shadows?"

Sophie looked at him curiously. "I tried finding a gap, then tried smashing my consciousness against it."

"Well, I want to try something."

Sophie shook her head. "No way. It's too dangerous."

"Please? Otherwise, I'll live the rest of my life wondering what if." Rowan said.

"Fine. But I am coming." Sophie insisted.

"OK, that's fine."

"What are you trying?" Biana asked.

"I don't want to say yet, in case it doesn't work." Rowan explained.

Then he and Sophie went over to Tam and went into his mind.

Inside, everything was chaos. broken , shattered shards of memories floated everywhere, with no reason and order. The only whole one was the one that caused him to break in the first place. Rowan quickly went past it, not wanting to see Evila's dying body. He arrived at the shadowy wall. It was pure black, daunting and dark. He tried going straight through it, but it was as good as trying to walk through a wall.

'Mom, I'm going to try something.' he transmitted.

'OK,' she replied, 'what?'

"Well, what's the only thing that makes shadows go away?" he said.

Out loud, Sophie gasped. 'Light!' she said in her head.

'Exactly. So I am going to try to inflict happiness, making everything light.'

Rowan gathered energy from deep inside of his heart, pouring every ounce of happiness he had into his mind. Once he was ready, he shot it out at the shadow wall. At first, nothing happened. Then his mind exploded with light, melting away the shadows.

'It worked!' Rowan exclaimed.

But it wasn't over yet.

He went over to the little nook, and started feeding images. He gave images of him with his family, him with his friends, him with his sister. He gave images of joyous, happy times, inflicting the feeling along with each image. He fed pictures of Biana, Linh, Delia and Arya. Rowan saw it starting to work, but just the images weren't strong enough. So he decided to transmit something, the thing Biana had told Sophie to say.

'Biana doesn't blame you.'

Suddenly, all shadows retreated, and Rowan watched as memories began to piece themselves back together, and the memory of a dying Evila faded into the background. He pulled himself out of Tam's mind and stumbled back, drained. But it was worth it when he heard a small whisper.

Tam's whisper.

"I'm back."
