It's more than halfway through the school year and I'm switching schools. I keep switching because I feel like I don't belong. In this school, I plan to stay. There are only two months left of this and then I'm free, like a bird. I am staring at the ceiling as I lay on my new bed, the one in my new bungalow. I've already unpacked my bags, and I'd be lying if I said I was tired. I was exhausted.
I sat up in bed. It's only 3pm, I can't possibly be tired. I drag myself over to a drawer that I had filled with my undergarments. I grab underwear and a bra and walked to my bathroom. Even though I live here alone, I lock the bathroom door. I walk over to the sink and put my hands on the counter. I look up at myself. My innocent green eyes stand out from my wavy dark brown hair that ends just under my armpit. The green in my eyes shares the colour with the grass. The bags under my eyes tell me how tired I really am. I strip down and turn on the warm water. I go back to the mirror and look at my body.
I'm a fit person, but I wouldn't call myself attractive. Everybody I've ever met in my life said I was beautiful inside and out. I believe them, but not so much that I call out to people that I am. I usually think bad of myself, hence the cuts on my arms. I regret ever cutting myself. The scars are very faded and hard to see though which is surprising with my
pale-ish skin tone. I turn to the side and look at the obscure birthmark on my hip. I've always had it, but I just notice what it is. There's a half moon on my left hip. The one thing about it is the way it looks is It looks more like a tattoo than a birthmark. I carefully slip off my special necklace that I got from my mom years ago. She died when I was twelve, I'm eighteen now. My birthday was the third of January, lucky me. My mom would always call me clover. I asked her why one day and she smiled at me and chuckled. "Clovers are lucky, especially four leafed ones, just like you." She would always mess up my hair and I would only giggle.I stepped into the now heated shower and let the warm water take away the stress. You'd think that because my parents died when I was young I'd have foster parents, but no. They didn't do a thing. I rub away the abandonment I've felt from my loved ones. I use shampoo and conditioner then I step out of the shower and get dressed again. After my parents were murdered before my own eyes, I inherited all their money. Our family owned millions of dollars, and it was all mine. You'd think that because I had money I would spend it like crazy but my mom had taught me better. I used it as needed.
I walk out of the bathroom and I feel the urge to go outside. I pull on some socks and walk down the hall. The house is quiet, like it should be. I pull on some comfy shoes and then open the door I close and lock it behind me. I make my way down the path to the sidewalk. I let the gentle sound of laughter fill my ears. I turn left and let the gentle wind blow in my face. I admire the homes as I walk through the neighborhood. I see little kids playing games with their smiling parents. It makes my heart melt. I continue on my walk.
There's a group of guys talking beside a fence. Two are leaning on it, and three others are just standing around them. They stop talking as one of them see me. His orange eyes stay in mine. His eyes tell me his emotions. I've learned to do that over the years. He's curious. Since they are on the same side of the road as me, I step to the right and onto the grass beside the sidewalk. "Hey." One of the guys greets. I stop walking and turn for a brief moment. The air around them smells of fresh rain. I take it in and smile shyly, keeping away from eye contact. "Hi." I respond and continue walking. They don't call back for me and I march on peacefully.
As the road turns into an intersection, I turn around and start to walk back home. I check my watch and see that it's about 5pm. As I turn a corner, I see the boys are no longer there, against the fence. I sigh in relief and smile to myself. All the children are no longer out playing and I feel alone again. The cruel silence is back. I eventually get to my front door. I shove my hand in my pocket looking for my keys. I sigh sadly as I figure out I left them inside. I walk around my house as I try to find a way in. I get to my backyard and try opening the door. Thankfully, I left it unlocked. I close the door behind me as I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding. I slide off my shoes and carry them back to my front door. I set them down and march to my kitchen.
I open the bag of stale bread I bought a while back. I take some pre-cooked bacon out of the cupboard, lettuce from the fridge, along with some cheese. Even though it's a bit late for a BLT, I'd have one any day. I grab a sharp knife to cut up the stale bread. I cut the first piece off the loaf and set it on a plate. I go to cut the next piece when the knife slips and cut my hand. I scream in pain and drop the knife, falling to the ground with a clatter. I look at my now gushing hand. There's a deepish cut going from left to right on my hand, a straight cut. I curse under my breath. I walk to my bathroom and put on some antiseptic so it won't get infected. I curse from the more intense burn of it on my wound.
I tie some cloth around my hand I walk back to my mess. I've lost my appetite and clean up the ingredients. I clean up my blood and grab a granola bar. So much for being a four leafed clover. I throw away the rapper and once again sadly go to my room. I sit at the windowsill and look out. In the distance all I see are the street lights. I look back at my yard from seeing something move. I stare for a moment and then I see it. Two orange eyes open and stare at me. I feel my body shiver. The outline tells me something I didn't want to know. It's a wolf. It's black figure is an outline due to the darkness of the sky.
I've seen wolves before, but this one was oddly larger. He was sitting near the side walk, a good twenty meters away. In shock, I pull the curtains closed and turn off the lights. In what feels like a minute, my eyes shoot open to the sound of my buzzing alarm clock. I groan as I get out of bed. I look down at my hand. It's fully healed. That's very strange. I shrug it off and walk over to my dresser. I take off my PJs before looking in the mirror. I had an awful dream last night. The wolf outside had broken down my door and eaten me. I shiver and get ready for my first day of school. I slip on some black high waisted shorts and pulled on a mint green tank top. I brushed my dark hair and curled it slightly. I walked to the kitchen and took out an apple.
I grab my backpack and throw it over one of my shoulders. I close the door to my house behind me. I bite my apple and turn to the road. A red Ferrari is in front of my house. The window is rolled down and I look in. It was the guy from yesterday. I walk closer and bend down in front of the car. His orange eyes met with mine, the same colour as the wolf's. I mentally shook the thought out of my mind. He looks back down at his fingernails that he was picking at. "Whatcha doing here?" I ask biting my apple again. There's a pause, and then he looks at me. "If you want I'll take you to school." He says. I see the hope in his eyes. "Okay." I say and open the passenger door. I sit down and to up my seatbelt. "My name's Luke by the way. What's yours?" He asks and I look his way. "Scarlett." I say simply. He starts the car and we start drifting down the road.
"What pack are you from?" He asks and I am puzzled. "Pardon me, but I have no clue what you are talking about." I say honestly. I throw my apple core out the window. What's up with this guy? "I think you do." He replies. "No I don't!" I yell and slam my hands on my thighs, swinging my head to the left two quickly. "You really have no Idea, do you?" He says in a softer tone. My tense muscles relax and the air is no longer uncomfortable. "No, I don't. I honestly don't." I steady my breathing. "Alpha Darren and I would like to speak to you after your schooling then." He says. "What's up with you? What do you mean?" I question. "You'll see after your schooling. Darren would love you." He says smiling. "I'm so confused right now I'm not even going to ask." I say putting my hands up as if I was getting arrested. He chuckles. "We're here. I'll be here after school so you come right back here." He says. I chuckle. "Yes mom." I joke and close the car door behind me.
