TW: violence
I know I should have left Ethans place sooner. But the conversation had just kept going and we were having too fun to break it off in time. He's my best friend and it's not uncommon for us to talk for hours. Now, it was dark. The few stars that could be seen was out and so was the people of the night.
The others in our little friend group think that Ethan and I are a couple. They're wrong, sadly.
New York is a beautiful city. But it also has a ugly side, like every other place. Walking alone at night was never a good idea. Maybe I should have taken Ethans offer to let him walk me home? But I didn't want to be a hassle to them. Especially not now when Ghostface was funning around like a lunatic.
I was walking down the dimly lit street with my headphones in my ears. Blocking out the world, ignoring it as I moved towards my apartment. I was sharing with another college student, it's home.
After a few more steps, this bad feeling came creeping. I sensed that something was wrong. I pulled out my headphones in order to listen to my surroundings. I had this feeling like I was being followed. I looked over my shoulder and saw two large figures. The silouettes off two men. And they know. The moment they saw that I was aware of them, they started to walk quicker and talk louder.
I would like to believe that every person is good and kind. That is what I want to believe. But my gut was screaming that these men was danger.
So I started walking quicker, to outpace them. They walked quicker in response. Then I started running. My heart was racing and I ducked into a alley.
I tried to calm my beating heart while pressed against the wall. A few seconds passed. Silence. Maybe the man had lost me? Maybe they gave up? I let out a breath, thinking I was okay.
Then I could hear their voices again. They found me and before I could make a run for it, they had cornered me in this alley.
The older one with little hair left, he was grinning at me and looking me up and down, to my disgust.
"What's wrong babe? Don't wanna talk to us?" He sneered at me and glanced at his friend, like he was waiting for approval. The mans breath reeked of alcohol.
"We feel offended that you just, took off. We just wanna get to know you better..." The other man said in a "caring" tone. He was shorter compared than the first, but even uglier looking.
"Leave me alone." I said, trying to walk past. But they wouldn't let me leave.
"Don't act like such a bitch. It's friday afterall, let's party!" The first man said. He took a step closer and continued: "Or what? You don't wanna party with us?"
"I said, leave me alone!" I said again, this time louder and this time accompanied by me pushing the first guy in order to try and walk by. But it was useless. The only reward from that was pissing the men off further.
I felt trapped. Panic.
What happened next, happened so quick. Out of nowhere, a dark arm appeared and slashed the throat of the first man. His eyes grew wide, his irises shrank to dots. Then red. Blood ran down his throat and some red bubbles appeared from his mouth. He coughed once, before falling down to his knees, onto the floor. He's bleeding out, that or already dead. I can't tell.
I've never seen someone die. In horror, I simply stared until the other man yelled, which shook me from my shock.
I looked up and saw a shape, masked by the night, dressed entirely in black. Except for the mask he wore, a white mask. Ghostface.
Ghostface whiped the blood of the knife he was holding. He wasn't turned against me. He was turned against the other man.
In less than a second, Ghostface walked up and in one swift motion he buried the blade into the mans chest. Ghostface stabbed repeatedly, quickly and all over the mans chest. The man first screamed, but the yelling quickly stopped.
Silence. Everything was quiet as Ghostface let the mans body fall to the ground.
I took a deep breath. I should run away. Hell, I should have done that when Ghostface slit the first mans throat. I could feel the anger, that was coming from Ghostface. But it... It's hard to explain. But the anger wasn't directed against me.
I really don't know what had just happened. I stared at the masked individual, then looked down at the men. I don't even want to think about what would have happened if Ghostface hadn't appeared.
"Uhm, thank you?" I said with a low voice, hoping that Ghostface wouldn't turn around and kill me now. But he only tilted his head, and looked at me. I couldn't see his eyes, since they were behind the mask, but I think he was looking at me.
In a swift motion, he cleaned his knife again. I swallowed and pressed myself closer to the wall. Is he gonna kill me now? He took a few steps closer. Then he knelt down beside the first man, the one who had had his throat slit. My first thought was that Ghostface would check for a pulse, or something. But instead he violently stabbed into the dead mans back. One time. Two times. Three times.
The anger I had felt from him before wasn't directed towards me. It was towards them. The unknown men who had followed me into this alley.
I took my chance and ran. Out of the alley and once I was a block away, I slowed down and picked up my phone from the back pocket. I want to talk to Ethan. I need to talk to someone about what had just happened. That Ghostface had... Saved me? It was as unexpected as snow in july. But it had happened.
