I'm Not Mean

"It must be clear that nothing is going to happen between the two of you," Connor states firmly.

He called me to see how I was doing and is advising me to issue a statement on my social media to refute the press.

"Y-yes... nothing is going to happen... "

"Athena, is there something you need to tell me? One thing is what we're going to communicate, but if I have to do damage control, I need to know everything."

"I like him. I really like Rick. We were on the verge of kissing, but he stopped himself. He wants to talk to his wife before doing anything."

Connor says nothing. I can almost hear him contemplating all possible ways to respond or react to the media's exaggerated reaction. I've provided them with the spark, and now all they have to do is throw as much gasoline as they want.

"So, is it possible that something will happen, then?"

"I hope so." I can't hold back with him. "I don't know when, but I want something to happen."

"Do you plan on seeing each other again?"

"No. Since we entered the hotel, each going our separate ways, we haven't spoken. We might meet again before we leave."

After opening up to my therapist, I've learned that Connor only wants the best for me professionally, and whether or not I follow his advice, he needs to know everything that goes through my mind and could affect my work. The negative press I could receive from being with a married man can impact my future career, in accordance with the moralistic and sexist standards of many firms and companies. If a man were to do the same, there wouldn't be as much of a problem. Just look at Gareth signing advertising contracts left and right. They only remember sorority when it suits a few...

"My advice is to avoid being photographed in any more affectionate situations until, at the very least, Del Río resolves his relationship status. And in this case, don't comment on anything on your social media. You can't deny something that you're likely to confirm in the future. Your credibility and transparency must remain beyond doubt."

That reassures me. Connor isn't advising me to stop seeing Rick altogether. He knows he can't meddle in my relationships, except in their impact on my work. Still, he always advises me to take certain precautions when I'm in with someone. Though it may sound cold and professional, I can sense his concern for me as a person, not just as a client.

"Be careful, Athena. If you believe he's worth it, go ahead, but always think twice before acting."

"Thank you, Connor. That's what I'll do."

Kay will be back any moment now, from who knows where, and we'll arrange to go for a walk and have dinner. I can't help but dive into the news portals and see our pictures flooding their front pages. I didn't expect this to spread so quickly and easily...

"What's this?" A pop-up window alerts me to a live video in Malaga! Isn't that Rick's city? "Oh, God! 'Live Statements from Rocio, Ricardo del Rio's future ex!' What the hell!"

I can't help but open it and see those scavenging vultures bombarding Rocio with questions. I see her looking sad, wearing sunglasses to cover her, most likely, tear-filled red eyes due to the surprise. One after another, they throw questions at her as she tries to get into the car.

"Did you know that Ricardo was cheating on you with Athena?"

"They can't say that! Nothing happened!" I exclaim indignantly.

"That's not true. He didn't cheat on me." I can't deny that her response surprises me. Anyone else would have confirmed it, driven by the pain and resentment caused by what our embrace seems to imply.
