The Best Thing

I can barely remember all the times I've been interviewed. Imagine: since I was fifteen, doing television and tours, appearing in magazines and youth programs, radio, television. When you reach adulthood, that spectrum expands, and they want to feature you on the covers of even the most unexpected magazines—which I won't mention, but some of you might guess.

Frances Hallbright is a great communicator who started as a writer for Conan O'Brien and, on occasion, appeared as a collaborator in his various segments. Someone at the network realized that she was well-liked and had an impact on women and girls. She didn't shy away from her social and egalitarian complaints—even on more than one occasion, she stood up to the network when her demands were not heard.

The first and most controversial demand: only women would make up all the technical, creative, production, and executive teams for the show. If they came from vulnerable groups, even better. It was a gamble that didn't start off very well. The majority had very little experience. However, they are now approaching two thousand shows with almost the same group of women and unquestionable quality on par with Oprah or Ellen.

This is my third interview with her, and possibly the most intimate.

"I have to tell you, I couldn't be happier with the outcome of the leak involving Litmanen and Freechild's conversation. They were fired from their channel and their football team, respectively. Although it's sad that it's necessary to use them as examples of what happens when you speak about a woman in such a way," Frances remarks.

"To be honest, I don't care. It's been so long since they've hurt me that whatever happens to them doesn't offer me much consolation. But I do hope that, as you say, it serves as a lesson so that we can finally stop speaking about women in such a derogatory manner. It's so demeaning, so destructive, that few things can heal those wounds."

"Many of you may think that Athena is a person filled with grudges and resentment, but let me tell you that I haven't seen a single publication, interview, or leak where you criticize any of the people who have been hurting you for several years, including the individuals named earlier. Why is that? After all the terrible things they said to you, why do you stay silent?"

"Someone has to break the cycle of violence that leads to nothing good and that many media outlets enjoy. I don't want to live consumed by hatred for the rest of my life. I need peace, to move forward, to overcome this, and I can only do that through acceptance and forgiveness."

"Can you really forgive them after everything?"

"Yes. That doesn't mean it's easy. However, it's what I have and what I need to do."

"I was surprised by what happened the other day when you asked in your Instagram Stories for people to leave Anna Williams alone."

"It's what I had to do. Some people were criticizing her because she appeared in a Story with one of Rick's books. They immediately demanded that she put the book down, insulting and threatening her. It wasn't fair for anyone to attack her. I won't get into what she did or didn't do, but I don't want people who love me to attack anyone. That's not who I am, and it's not what I preach. That's why I asked them to leave her alone. If she wants to read one of Rick's books or appear with one of my albums, she's completely free to do so. Just like if someday I have to watch a movie or a series in which she appears, I'll do it without a problem. I've closed that chapter. Her presence doesn't cause me pain. I'm learning to be happy, and I won't let anything or anyone try to steal my smile."
