Starfae:
Name meaning: Star fairy
Species: Aves, birds
Status: Unthreatened
Native to: Everywhere in the Lost Cities
Physical Description:
Starfaes are miniscule birds, much like hummingbirds in shape, with a variety of feather colours ranging from the dullest browns to the most brilliant shades of gold. Every one of these birds have amber-gold eyes and tail feathers like a peacock's, the only difference being that starfaes can not fan them out, and on a starfae, the feathers are much scaled down.
Behaviours:
While starfaes do live in large and expansive colonies, they tend to be solitary animals who prefer to act independently. In contradiction to their self-sufficient nature, starfaes highly value their friendships and go to great lengths to protect their loved ones. Though these birds are rather friendly, they are also very territorial and do not allow for threats on their nests.
Interesting genetics:
The large variety of colours that a starfae's feathers can take on were once thought to be passed on genetically. However, many studies have proven that the colour of a starfae's feathers have and will never be affected by genetics. Each starfae's hue in their feathers are of pure chance and spontaneity.
Special abilities: 1, star bursts
When starfaes feel threatened, these unique birds can call upon the energy and light of stars to use their special ability, the star burst. Using the energy and light that the starfae absorbed, it pushes the force out, blinding, confusing and knocking out the threat. The star burst knocks out any living thing within a three metre radius of the starfae. Thankfully, starfaes have very strong mental capabilities, and with the added absorption of light it gives them a clarity to their thinking. Using their enhanced mental abilities, starfaes are capable of shielding any non-threatening living beings using a sort of "mental bubble".
Sun bursts are star bursts but when the starfae calls upon the energy and light from the sun instead of from a star. Considering the proximity of the sun compared to the stars, this makes the star burst much more powerful and even takes a toll on the bird itself. If a starfae uses a sun burst, it will likely be put in something called their 'last star' state. The amount of energy and light absorbed from the sun is what fluctuates the severity of the 'last star' state
'Last Star' State:
The term for when a starfae is on its deathbed. Easily identifiable by the change in a starfae's plumage colour and eye colour. When in the 'last star' state, the starfae will go from its normal plumage colour to pure white, and its eyes will change from the normal liquid gold to a shade similar to aquamarine. As a starfae recovers from the 'last star' state, their plumage will slowly turn back to their normal colour, same thing with their eyes. Starfaes that have once been in the 'last star' state are identifiable by looking at their tails. If a starfae has been in the 'last star' state, anywhere from one to nine of their tail feathers will be permanently coloured a gold colour. The gold tail feathers are their supposed scar from their close call with death. Recovery from the 'last star' state is not rare, but not exactly easy or common either.
