I forgot that I never wrote a prologue for this fic, and I had the sudden inspiration to write one. So here it is:
They were going to win this time. It was neither a hope or a demand, it was a statement. But for a statement to be a statement, it had to be true. After their many losses and few victories, everyone fighting these battles just wanted to kick the Neverseen in the butt and go home, back to their lives before this chaos.
And she could give them that...or at least try to.
With a small intake of air, she closed her eyes, searching for that feeling that tugged at her, constantly aching for her attention. And when she found it, she didn't turn it away and ignore it like usual. This time, she gave it what it wanted and embraced it, letting the warmth spread through her veins.
"Shaylie?" Fitz's confused voice called from beside her, though his voice felt distant she could feel his presence beside her.
"The light is calling, Fitz Vacker," She answered, a smile curling onto her lips. "And this time, I'm ready."
While Fitz took the time to process her words, she let the energy pool into her. It started with the light flooding her veins, then spreading out into her nerves, her fingertips, and eventually her heart and brain.
"No!" Fitz's feebly far away voice shouted, clearly having finally understood her words.
For a brief moment, it felt as if a hand had gently clasped onto her wrist. But touch was now a distant memory. Now, she could only feel the light and energy building up inside of her, barely clinging to her conscience.
"It's too late now, Fitz. But I'm ready, and I'm going to win. We're going to win."
She didn't hear if he responded, all she could hear now was the ever-growing hum that rang in her ears.
Using the last scrap of conscience that she still had, she spread it out covering her friends and family in a shield before bringing her hands together and pushing all the energy and light she had in her body outwards.
For only a split second, she worried that it hadn't worked and opened her eyes to see if it had. Then the entirety of the throne room flashed with pure white light before everything turned to darkness.
