Chapter 18
JJ reached the end of the dirt road where an old house sat. It was surrounded by cypress and pecan trees while a bayou ran along the side of it. It had a dock with an old boat sitting in the brown water, swaying in the breeze. The house itself was a nice size, the only thing wrong with it was, it just needed a new paint job. The gray paint was flaked on the wooden siding from the years of weather and sun.
"Home sweet home." JJ belted out as he hopped down from the drivers side of the truck . Suddenly, around the corner of the wrap around porch, a huge german shepherd came bolting and barking.
Paige noticed the dog as she was getting out and quickly jumped back in the truck. Nate, ever on guard, just watched JJ take off running as the dog chased him.The Cajun went once around the house and then dropped and rolled in the grass. The dog then jumped on top of him. It turned out that the dog was not savage at all. Not in the least bit, but the way JJ made it seemed running like an idiot screaming, gave Paige a scare. The dog licked his face like crazy and JJ gripped his fur wrestling it about.
"It's ok. This is my partner, Sasquatch!" JJ noticed the two standing concerned beside his truck.
"Mama was watching him for me...ah puhhhhh" he made a face at the dog. The dog passed major gas and JJ gagged.
Paige finally opened the door and hopped out when she noticed it was safe. "He got the froch today. Mama must have been feeding you pork cracklings, huh?" JJ got up holding his nose.
"The what?" Paige asked looking over towards Nate with a confused face.
"I stopped asking a long time ago." Nate looked down at Paige rolling his eyes.
"The frotch, like the bubble guts." JJ said walking over to them. He then turned to look at the house then them.
"It ain't much, but it was my MawMaw's. She gave it to me and Sean when she passed." his face kinda dropped, his smile turned to a straight face when he mentioned Sean.
"Who is Sean?" Paige asked in a soft voice. JJ looked down and then over at her.
"He was my brother. The one that was murdered by the Cartel. He's the whole reason for me joining the Devils and all remember?" JJ looked at her and Nate both.
"Oh, I'm sorry." Paige didn't know what else to say.
"It's ok, come on, I'll cook y'all up something." He waved for them to follow him as he began singing like always.
"It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had..."
Nate, still quite, followed JJ up the four steps onto the porch. Paige followed behind Nate and so did the dog. Sasquatch ran up to the door and watched as JJ unlocked it. As soon as the door opened, the happy pup ran in straight to his bed grabbing his raccoon chew toy. JJ walked in and headed straight to the kitchen. The dining area was to the left with a small table and the kitchen was directly on the side of it. You could tell the house had been locked up awhile, it kinda smelled like a mix between an old lady's home and wet humid wood. Paige closed the door behind her and stood by Nathaniel. JJ dug in the fridge for something to cook. "Make yourself at home. It's a three bed two bathroom house, so there's plenty of room. The living room is in there and the hall leads to the rooms. The guest bathroom, it's at the beginning of the hall." Nate nodded and went to look for it, while Paige looked around at the various pictures that hung up along the wall.
