CHAPTER 30
The heartfelt father-daughter bonding moment was short lived. A car that JJ didn't notice before, clipped him from behind and JJ struggled to stay on the road. The blow, plus the weight in the back of the truck, made it spin a bit, but JJ controlled it enough for it not to go into the ditch or flip. He slammed on the breaks, leaving black marks on the road from the smoking tires. The truck finally came to a stop across the small, two lane, back country road. Woods and marsh surrounded both sides of the little road, so it was a perfect place for an ambush, no witnesses or anyone to help for miles.
The black town car that had been following them since the restaurant pulled up and stopped a couple yards away. "You alright, Annie?" he looked over to check on her. She nodded as her knuckles turned white from the steel grip on her seatbelt. "What the heck happened?" she asked, a bit shaken up but not hysterical, more pissed than afraid. JJ turned to look at the town car and the man that exited it.
"Son of a..." JJ's eyes went wide. He kept his eyes on the man as his hand searched for his handgun that was stuck between the seat. Now, JJ knew he should have kept his guard up, especially now, since he had Annie, but he let it down. This mistake could cost both of their lives, but now was not the time to panic. Johnny knew he had to keep his head straight, if not for himself, than for his daughter. The tall, bulky-built black man made his way towards them. He had a shotgun in his hand which was almost the same color as his skin.
"Johnny, da crazy Cajun." he spoke with a strong African accent, as he pumped the shotgun.
"Get down!" JJ grabbed Annie's head and forced it to the seat. The shotgun pellets shot out of the window and peppered the side of the truck, luckily it didn't go through. Johnny was smart enough to double wield an armor-type shield on his little truck, just in case this would happen. JJ unbuckled Annie's seat belt quickly.
"Now, when I tell you to, you run into the woods and hide." Annie nodded and didn't say a word. She just listened and tried to stay calm like him, but fear could be seen in her eyes as she waited for JJ to say when.
"Go!" JJ yelled, raising up his handgun to shoot at the man to cover for Annie to escape. Annie did as she was told and took off running into the woods. The brush and thicket was right along the side of the highway, and Annie ran as fast as she could through it. Branches and leaves smacked her face as she forced her way through the thick grass. Annie's heart was pounding with fear and she only paused a minute to get her boots out of the thick mud. JJ slid out of the truck, the same way Annie did and laid his back against the cab of the truck. He heard the raccoon causing chaos in the bed of the truck and it gave him an idea.
"So Kojo, who sent you?" he asked, reaching under the tire to grab his other gun and clip that he had hidden.
"Oh JJ, You should know the answer to that question. Lucifer herself, of course." Kojo shot another two rounds at the truck. JJ popped up quickly to shoot the rest of his clip for cover so he could grab the raccoon bag. Kojo was one of the Devils from his past. The African warlord and hitman that for some reason, stayed close to Marina after the demise of the hit man group. JJ took hold of the end of the bag and then ducked for cover.
"Looks like I caught you off guard, Little Cajun." The man laughed and walked around from his car towards the truck.
"Who was the girl? A new girlfriend, maybe? She's a bit young for you, huh?" he chuckled. Johnny was relieved they didn't know about his daughter and he planned on keeping it that way.
"Well I can't help it, the ladies love Johnny..." he said, untying the raccoons bag, but holding it closed.
"I don't see how anyone could like you, you are such an idiot..." Kojo slipped out his machete, that was attached to his belt, and walked around the truck.
