CHAPTER 29
The two finished paying for all the groceries and were putting them in the back of the truck, far away from where the raccoon was. After emptying the buggy, they both hopped in the truck, fastened their seat belts, and were back on the road, heading towards his place. JJ's place, which now will be their place, just another thing JJ needed to get used to as he glanced over at Annie from the corner of his eye. Annie was just looking out of the window, checking things out he guessed, but the silence was killing him so he spoke up.
"So...Is there anything else you want to know?" Annie turned her head and shrugged a little like she was thinking.
"What about the rest of your...well our family?" She gave him a small smile like she was not sure that she should have said 'our' but it is her family too, JJ thought. He cocked his head a bit as he kept his eyes on the road, trying to figure out where to start.
"Well, they are your family too, so I don't mind telling you. It's just, where to start..." He looked over to her and gave her a smile before putting his focus back on the road. They still had several miles to go before home, so he figured now would be a good time to tell his daughter every thing about his family.
"Well my mom, your grandma was a caregiver, used to like to go to the casino a lot but when dad died, she found God and became a church going woman. She had a sister and my uncle was a cross country truck driver. That's how we learned a little about fixing cars, but my brother got obsessed with them, big time." He paused as he looked in the rear view mirror, he had the strangest feeling that they were being followed, but he didn't see anything out of the ordinary. JJ just brushed it off and continued with talking about his family.
"My dad was a welder, but died when I was in high school. I pretty much became the man of the house." Annie turned and looked at him with a little bit of sadness in her eyes. That made JJ feel awful because he knew how she felt not having a father when you need one, but he told himself that it wasn't his fault. JJ didn't know, nor did anyone ever reach out to him about Annie.
He looked away from her while trying to calm himself down when he felt her hand on his arm.
"Hey! I told you, I don't blame you at all, how can I blame someone who didn't even know?" She gave him a little smirk which made him calm down even quicker, she took her hand off him then asked.
"So, can you tell me about your childhood?" Annie questioned as she settled back in her seat. JJ let a small smile show.
"I guess, I mean, I wasn't anything special. I was on the baseball team in high school, could have went to college but I was lazy. We...Sean and I, both were some good ole' boys, always getting into trouble being daredevils and petty stuff like building ramps to jump our bikes into the bayou. I broke my arm one time doing that. "He paused and let out a laugh, remembering that one.
"Sean kept stealing my baseball cards when we were in middle school, so one day I caught a crawfish from the yard and put it in the small tin box that I kept my cards in. Mama never believed me that Sean was stealing, so I was going to prove it to her. So when he went to take my brand new cards, the crawfish got his finger. He came running in with the crawfish connected to his finger. Back then, Sean was such a mama's boy, so he cried to her for everything and I always got in trouble for it. If I did it or not." JJ explained.
"Anyways, he came running to mama bawling and crying his little eyes out, with this huge crawfish hanging from his finger and I walk into the room to watch the whole thing..." He paused to laugh.
"Well, that proved to mama that this whole time Sean was lying so he got a good old butt whooping. Good thing too, 'cause if he never would have found that crawfish, mama would have never known he was a lying little turd, plus could you imagine the smell? puhhhh" JJ kept getting that strange feeling again, so he kept checking all the mirrors and again still nothing seemed out of place.
