Zaratorio: The Story Continues

Part 28

'I think I understand these Cossacks much better than I did the Ruthenians', ventures Paulina. 'They seem to live a warrior life that is much closer to that of we Buzhans and the other Slavic tribes all those centuries ago.'

'But do they, or should I say did they, appreciate the mysteries of life; the unspoken power of the Steppes?' muses Sehzula

'Warfare was beginning to become more scientific back in that time, or rather this time, as we are visiting them, but they are so primitive compared with the people of the 21st – or the 25th – century!' exclaims Anna

Bjorn smiles to himself.

Three beauties; a warrior, a visionary and a great brain. I am spoiled for choice!

The Ukrainian Cossacks were a well-disciplined army, that took on most of the tasks that in other parts of Europe devolved to the State or the Church. Led by an office corps, the Cossacks provided economic, social and spiritual assistance to the Slavic peoples who lived in the south of modern day Ukraine, particularly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of the Common Era. Paulina has found some more interesting files on Anna's mobile phone, and insists that even within their wilderness camp, she can still make some appetising cuisine. Having managed to hunt down a wild Carpathian boar, using her famous Buzhan wiles, and encouraging Sehzula to light a fire, her charms are still very difficult for Anna to resist.

'All we need to do is substitute the boar cuts for the pork listed in these twenty-first century recipes, and we will have a fine meal for ourselves. As for Bjorn, if he returns before sunset. I am sure he will love this Kapusniak soup.'

Professor Amber Jessop has taken the night off from the ongoing battle with Zaratorio and is studying a book on naval history. Once upon a time, ships simply got you from A to B on water, but in modern times, there are air ships, and space ships, and even time ships.

Eventually she dozes off, and in her dreams she is floating on an endless, and perhaps eternal, sea of green water, surrounded by what seems to be an ever-growing armada of clear glass bottles

Eventually she dozes off, and in her dreams she is floating on an endless, and perhaps eternal, sea of green water, surrounded by what seems to be an ever-growing armada of clear glass bottles. And each of these bottles contains a finely-crafted model ship. Some are barquetines, others are schooners. And there are caravels, galleons and triremes as well; with the whole fleet spreading out for many miles - as far as the eye can see.

The sea is a fine place to make a life; a place to dwell, and yet to also move on; to be absent from some of those we love, and yet to make connection with other lovers, as well as with strangers whom we have yet to meet.
