Zaratorio the Story Continues
By Clive Mason-Hall
Part 65
***
The flight from Florida to Ukraine was tiring, but worthwhile. Samantha is determined to persuade Amber Jessop and the rest of the SISP that she deserves more than just a feasibility study into her theories about Inga's recent biotemp activities. A brief nap at her hotel will hopefully be sufficient to recharge her batteries and then go into conference with her new colleagues.
A few hours later, and the weather presenter's wish seems to have been fulfilled. Thanks to the careful mentorship of Krystle, she is already extremely familiar with the less sensitive aspects of SISP technology, and has constructed a holographic presentation of the evidence for the existence of Inga's 'weather bomb'. She makes a video-connection between her laptop and the Institute's MCD network and speaks to Anton.
'Hello, Dr. Koval. Can you tell Professor Jessop I am ready to attend?'
'Good. You know the address?'
'Of course ...'
'Please activate the MCD that you were given back in Florida, so we can double check that your bio-recognition data is correct. Given the ability of the biotemps to create doppelgängers, we can't be too careful ...'
'I understand.'
'Yes, you are checking out as Dr. Samantha Pahoda. Congratulations on your thesis, by the way. Now please make your way on foot towards our headquarters, and as we are tracking you, Lauren Eliot-Evans will come to meet you outside.'
'I see. I look forward to meeting you all.'
Everything seems to be going to plan, but just as Samantha and Lauren are about to shake hands, there is an enormous roaring sound, heard all over Kyiv, and the midday sun is blotted out by a black cloud-like mass, which extends to every part of the sky.
'Lauren, this is Amber. Get Samantha inside quick!
This is not just a weather event; it's a chrono-attack!!'
A few minutes later, the newcomer is in the Control Hall, but she is now being looked after by Brenda, as all the senior members of the Institute are at their desks, trying to make sense of what's happening.
'Incoming Odgan ships detected over the Black Sea. Cloaked against visual and radar surveillance, but not fully protected against our instruments', exclaims Jennifer.
'I'm picking up something that looks suspiciously like a group of armed P-Vanir moving through Bulgaria,' calls out Anton.
'Holopaths; what are you getting?'
Holopath2 is a little slow to respond, but then confirms the two previous sightings before drawing attention to yet another development
'I am detecting two chrono-signatures moving in lockstep along the Dnieper River. It appears to be Zaratorio and Circe!'
