Zaratorio: the Story Continues

By Clive Mason-Hall

Part 71

***

Two days have passed, and Melissa and Sehzula have done their very best to 'sweep' their Manchurian house for any supernatural signs of their biotempador associate. All the rooms, the loft spaces and the outhouses had been checked, but still no Zaratorio. A fingertip search has been to no avail.

Melissa sighs.

'He has still managed to outfox us. After all, at his most powerful, he can move through time and space almost effortlessly, but it does seem as if something about this part of the time vortex has curtailed his powers. Which made me think we might catch him out.'

Sehzula nods her agreement.

'I have to concur. Unless our own chrono-abilities continue to grow quietly, and reach a new threshold, we must assume that we are destined to live out our time here.'

The houseboys provide tea and rice as refreshment. Although they have no English, it is fairly clear from the two women's body language that something is wrong and the young men are suitably kind and deferential.

In modern-day Kyiv, Amber and Anton are reviewing their latest wide spectrum analysis of trends in the time vortex.

'Still no sign of Zaratorio or Circe?' muses Amber.

'Indeed. No specific anomalies that might be linked to some attempt to disguise themselves.'

'If Lauren was correct, and Circe was planning to head for "the dawn of time", in other words as close to the Big Bang as a living creature could realistically go, she might well be living beyond the scope of our instruments.'

'But surely we would have identified some chrono-traces of her journey? And yet there do not seem to be any.'

Amber presses a few buttons on her console in order to access another database.

'And Zaratorio is even harder to trace. Once again, the only evidence is circumstantial. The very fact that the part of the vortex that corresponds with medieval China is so quiet suggests that something we don't understand is happening there.'

'I suppose the fact there are no time storms in our own vicinity is a blessing of a kind, but you cannot help but worry that the biotempadors will stage a resurgence at some point in the future.'

'And of course there is always the possibility of another attack by Inga ...'
