Zaratorio: The Story Continues
By Clive Mason-Hall
Part 43

Although Anna is keen to research as many aspects of life on the east coast of America in the year 1930 CE as possible, Paulina feels that they should stay in Manhattan and investigate Artem Koryt, to see if he really is a biotempador. Sehzula is also in favour of returning to the Pechera Club, but the Buzhan warrior suspects that the sometime priestess has very different motives.
'I understand your point of view, Anna. It would be interesting to interview Clarence Birdseye, and discuss the invention of frozen food, but I really must be sure that this Artem is an independent time-traveller, and not one of Zaratorio's agents.'

'I suppose that it's so obvious that it's almost not worth saying, but I have travelled in the time vortex and never acquired independent time-travelling powers' says Lauren. 'And so have you Jennifer!'
Her red-headed friend nods.
'That's true, and it is very strange. I can only assume that our equipment gives us some kind of protection against such changes – or that we are not susceptible to them in the first place.'
'I think the latter option is more probable.'

Professor Amber is looking very concerned.
'Anton ... I have received a high priority message from Admiral Pathway within the last hour.'
'Oh yes ... what does it say.'
'It refers to something called Hypothesis 47, namely the theory that there is a good reason why we cannot reach what you might call the mid-future, roughly half a googol of solar years from today.'
'And what is that good reason, pray?'
'Well, Hypothesis 47 suggests that there will be mid-future conflicts that make the SISP versus Zaratorio and Pathway versus the P-Vanir and the Odgans look like the Teddy Bears' Picnic.
The Chrono-Police, who are the subject of Hypothesis 46, may have sealed off part of the time vortex in order to protect the rest of us from their misdemeanours.'
'So what do we know about the Chrono-Police?'
'Very little ... although this logo does appear mysteriously, and for no apparent reason, in various part of the vortex.'

A return visit to the Pechera Club has been agreed. Sehzula leads the way, Paulina follows and the very reluctant Anna tags along behind.
The first person they meet is the voluptuous Melissa who seems genuinely pleased to see them.
'Well, hello ladies! Paulina, Anna and Sehzula. I'm very glad to see you all. And by the way, I'm restoring a little twist to my act tonight. I will be inviting someone in the audience to sing with me later!'
