Zaratorio: The Story Continues

By Clive Mason-Hall

Part Thirty-two

***

Catherine the trobairitz has been released from confinement because she seems to be no threat to the SISP. In fact she is a sweet and innocent young girl from medieval France – nothing more, and nothing less.

The songstress has the run of their Kyiv headquarters and shows no interest in going outside. However, her pattern of movement does indicate that she is increasingly curious about the EVM (Epochal Variation Matrix) standing at the far end of the Control Hall.

'So this is your time machine, Anton?'

'Yes, that's right. Normally people materialise in the tunnel at the front of the mechanism, but for some reason you appeared over there – and we still don't understand why.'

'Can you hear a tune, or am I imagining it?'

Jennifer and Lauren look puzzled and shrug.

Catherine begins to strum her lute and hum

Catherine begins to strum her lute and hum.

'It must be the music of the spheres! I was always taught that mere mortals could not hear it, but the wonders of your science have shown me that the impossible is often possible.'

Several hours pass and Catherine is still singing into the EVM.

Professor Amber has been collating the weekly reports from chrono-scientists working all over the world, and she is looking a little puzzled.

'Anton! It seems as if the time vortex is very calm again, and, as we realised a few weeks ago, this facilitates the powers of the biotempadors. For example, when Circe finally escaped.

What mischief Zaratorio will come up with is anybody's guess!'

Circe is growing in self-confidence as she moves through the centuries with aplomb.

'It must be time to try Zaratorio's mystical affinity spell. I wasn't strong enough to cast it before, but now I can do so. I think it is time to visit Paulina the Buzhan and the others in the era of the Ukrainian Cossacks!'

'So, Inga. Circe may have unintentionally returned Sonyakolo to Sehzula, but she may have also helped me to recover the ring of power and release its full potential.'

Zaratorio has seen an opportunity and is keen to exploit it.

'How so, master?'

'Because while the law of cosmic affinity has reunited the priestess with the magic ring, it has also sent her to ancient Egypt, the land of pyramids and mysteries, and if she is disoriented, then I will have an opportunity to unlock all of its powers!'

'What of her ally, Paulina?'

'Oh, she has been sent back to the land of Buzhan, with that Anna Rudolph woman. We need not worry about them!'
