CHAPTER 38
FALLING

THE NEXT time I woke up, I was strapped down into a chair. A thick metal held me down in multiple places, the room surrounding me was a blank white and I sat in complete silence except for the sound of my own voice. My mind felt blank, my body was weak and my head was dizzy.

President Snow's voice boomed through the room, from where, I had no idea.

"Well, Miss Willows." He mused, his voice dry and croaking as he spoke down to me as if I was merely a bug. "Did you seriously think I wouldn't find out?"

His tone was knowing. I could hear the smile in his tone as he spoke, his voice clear and mocking. I couldn't process what he said, my mind buzzing with drowsiness. I wasn't sure how long it's been since I woke up but silence enveloped me once again and a freezing air filled the room. The skin on my arms raised in goosebumps at the sudden chill that breezed over me. My breath came out in visible clouds that blended into the blank walls.

Soon, my socks that barely touched the ground began to stick to my skin, gradually getting soaked by the rising water in the room.

Fear flashed through my body, remembering what happened in the arena before I blacked out. I straightened my back and froze in place, my eyes wide at the series of events concurring in front of me.

"Tell me, Persephone." He spoke clearly, "How does it feel?" I could hear his finger tapping his desk quietly from wherever he sat. His daunting voice blaring into my ears.

"What-"

"You know, to build this rebellion from right before my eyes with all your friends to save your family only for you to be abandoned by those same friends?" He laughed dryly and a hologram played on the wall in front of me. It flashed videos of my parents and siblings being shot and killed one-by-one. My mouth felt dry, a scream that begged to escape fell upon deaf ears. The dazed state of my mind flooded with a variety of feelings and the very last video shot me disbelief through my heart: Cabel being stabbed in the chest by a trident.

"No.." My voice was quieter than a mouse, coming out as a choked croak. My heart ached at the sight. My eyes stung from the tears that flooded them. "You're lying." I denied.

"You're lying!"

My scream was muffled by the water seeping through my mouth like a flood. It suffocated me and burned my throat and nose with a dense ignited fire that didn't let out. I could barely hear the god-forsaken man's voice through the splashes of water that surrounded me, "Have I ever lied to you, Persephone?" His dry laugg entered my ears as electricity shocked my soul and drove a numbing pain up my back.
