CHAPTER 2
THE CAPITOL

MY EYES rested on the red velvety table cloth. Each fork laid in its proper place, reflecting the rays of the sun against the walls of the train that rattled as it moved. The luxury that decorated the walls of this cabin felt out of reach and unrealistic, even in my dreams. I could feel Dion's eyes on me as he watched me fiddle with my dress and kept my hands off the tableware. The woman who dragged us along was brewing a cup of tea and her voice filled the empty room.

"Oh right! I'm getting quite ahead of myself aren't I?" She giggled, "My name is Shuli Peradine. It's so lovely to meet you kids. I'm your escort."

Her hand, now wearing a silky glove, placed a dessert on my plate. My eyes met hers, alert and confused as I scooted farther back. "That's a donut, it's quite good. You should try it, you need to eat more anyway you look like a hollow skeleton."

Dion scoffed at the woman's words, poking at the clear coloured substance on his plate that bounced at each movement. "And stop poking at the poor jelly like it's your enemy Dion, it's unbecoming of you."

After taking a bite into the donut, I sat up completely straight and swallowed quickly, almost choking on it as I didn't chew it properly. Dion gave me a cup of water before finally speaking, "Who's our mentor? Where are they?"

Just on time, the door of the cabin slid open as a tired man walked in. His eyes were burdened by dark bags and his skin was dry and almost grey from exhaustion. "Levi Roscent, pleasure." He poured himself a cup of water and instead of drinking it, which is what I believed he was going to do when he lifted the filled cup, he splashed it on his face.

My mouth dropped in shock as Shuli fussed at him for making a mess and getting the floor wet. The dark haired man rolled his eyes and sat down, slinging his arm over part of the chair and leaned back. His dark and empty eyes met Dion's before they turned to me and his gaze lingered.

"You're fucking kidding me." His head fell back as he groaned, "I have a snot nosed brat this year, like those cocky little shits from last year weren't enough?" I frowned at his words but sat still, not wanting to anger my mentor.

"I refuse to teach a little kid, she's just going to die anyway."

Shuli went to grab at Levi's ear but before she could, I threw a knife at him that skid past his cheek and pierced the window behind him. A crack formed as the knife embedded itself into the glass; whispers of wind could be heard through the newly formed hole as everyone stared in shock. "Shouldn't you do your job?" I grumbled, glaring at the old man. "If you aren't, you're just better off dead."
